Alexandria, VA - Sheraton Hotel, Anything Near by
I am going to a Saturday afternoon wedding in Alexandria and staying at the Sheraton Old Town. Since the weddng doesn't start until the afternoon I am wondering if there is anything to do or see in the morning. A good walk, shopping, or can I take the metro into DC for the morning and be back at the hotel by noon? Thanks.

Sheraton Old Town (801 N. St. Asaph Street) is about 7 blocks from King Street, the heart of Old Town. Lots of nice shops there. You could also walk down to the Torpedo Factory to see artists at work and their artwork is for sale. If you are a AAA member, their guidebook for Virginia has a good historical walking trail and map in the Alexandria section. You can also go to the Alexandria Visitor's Center website and order a visitor's guide before your visit.
You could take Metro to D.C. but by the time you commute, you wouldn't have that much time there if you have to be back by noon. I think you'll find plenty to see and do for a morning right in Alexandria.

Thanks, both of you for your ideas. Is the Torpedo Factory in Old Town? Do you know what time the shops open? I would venture a guess around 10:00 and that would be a nice walk from the hotel and be back in time for the wedding. I figured going into DC wouldn't give me enough time, but I will definitely walk to King Street.
Also I willl go to the visitor's center website -I didn't know they had one.

You could make a very sweet time of it wandering around Alexandria on a Saturday morning.
Shops will open mostly around 10, including the Torpedo Factory which is at the intersection of King and Union Streets. Wouldn't count on all the studios being open at 10 though.
Alexandria has a nice farmers market in the square in front of City Hall (300 or 400 block of King St.) which starts at the crack of dawn and closes up around 10 or 11.
There are a number of bakeries well worth a visit for coffee and pastry: Firehook, Le Pain Quotidien, Bread & Chocolate which all open much earlier than 10.
All of these are within a 15-20 minute walk of the Sheraton.
Have a great trip and hope the wedding is fun!

obxgirl,
The farmers market sounds great for an early breakfast and walk around town. I saw from a map that the Sheraton isn't too far from the waterfront, so that may be a nice walk at night to overlook the Capital across the river.
Thanks

flgirl, You're slightly south of DC so your view from the Alexandria waterfront will be Maryland. The riverview is nice though I'm not sure you can see much at night. A first rate view nighttime view of DC can be seen from the George Washington Parkway between Reagan Airport and the 14th St Bridge. That is more of a drive thing than a walk one though.
