Alex Hotel and 70 Park Avenue Hotel in NYC

Does anyone have information about these 2 hotels? They both look great from the photos, but tripadvisor has very mixed reviews. If looking for a boutique style hotel, would you recommend one of the these?

If you wouldn;t be happy staying in the hotel as described on Tripadvisor I would definitely pick somewhere else. (There are always some people who are very picky - or have a specific bad experience - but if the reviews are generally mixed - the bad ones are usually realistic.)

nytraveler: I think you're absolutely right. The only exception I have found is when the reviewer goes on and on about the restaurant food. Usually that is not what I'm interested in; I want to know about the hotel and room itself. Unless, of course, it is a isolated resort without many restaurant options. Thanks.
I would still be interested from hearing from someone who has stayed there. Maybe they had a good experience.??

The Alex is supposed to be all suites and has kitchens. 70 Park is near Grand Central. I still have a problem with the term boutique, esp. in NYC when it often means tiny rooms and subpar service. If what you want is a smaller hotel that's not a chain, I can think of several others (the Elysee, the Library, the Casablanca, the Giraffe) I would prefer. But if you want something with a very modern decor, the ones you mention fit the bill. You might also check the Bryant Park which isn't so small but seems to have a good mix of modern "cool" and decent service.

Thank you mclaurie...I always apprciate your NY advise. Yes, I agree sometimes "boutique" means TINY and service is often not up to par.
When looking at both the mentined hotel rooms online, they just appealed to me for some reason, but sometimes those photos are deceiving. Have you ever been inside? Thank you for your help.
