Albuquerque tours
 

My husband is attending a conference in Albuquerque and I'm going to tag along because I've never been to New Mexico. We will be there next week. Can anyone recommend any tours that might be good for me to do on my own? Any other ideas of what might be fun to do on my own? I like history, art, theatre, food...
Any suggestions of what fun things to do while I'm there? I'll be there for 4 days with no car.

You could do a walking tour of Old Town, which starts at the Albuquerque Museum. The museum will also give you a glimpse into the history of New Mexico.

There are a lot of good restaurants in the Nob Hill area, east of the university.

Miss_Lynne, If there is any way you can rent a car you'll have access to much more to see. The nearby village of Corrales has some good little shops and galleries. The Sandia Peak Tramway is worth a trip, as is the Petroglyph National Monument and the nearby Indian pueblos. Santa Fe is only an hour away on the interstate or a meandering trip along the Turquoise Trail.

Maybe you could arrange for a cheapie rental via Priceline?

My understanding is that Sandia Tramway is closed for maintenance next week unfortunately. I would have loved to have had dinner up there!

No, I won't be renting a car while I'm there. I'm not too keen on driving around on my own and my husband will be at the conference during the day. That's why I wondered about tours that would get me around.

What part of town are you staying in? I agree with the Old Town tour. Unfortunately for you, ABQ is very spread out and our public transportation system leaves a lot to be desired so this is one of those cities where a car is good to have. If you are staying in the downtown/Old Town area, you will be close to museums,Old Town and the Bio Park (Gardens and aquarium). At least it would be a fairly cheap cab ride to most. The Hyatt is downtown. I'm sure you can hop on a bus up Central Ave to Knob Hill for good shopping and restaurants. It would be a short taxi ride to Old Town and the Bio Park area. Actually, I'm sure there must be a bus that goes there as well. I would suggest asking the hotel about a tour bus to Santa Fe. It's certainly worthwhile to try to get up there at least 1 full day. Enjoy!

I agree with the idea of a day trip to Santa Fe if possible. This site has info on day tours with contact numbers.

Another option may be the Sandia Shuttle; if they only pick up from the Airport, I'm sure you will be able to link up with them without too much difficulty if required. Call them to verify pickup locations.

My apologies if the tour site is out of date. I tried to make a dummy booking and Albuquerque is not on the list. Although, I did Coach USA tours from Anahiem last year and they are not on the list either. Best give them a call to bwe certain. enjoy your visit

Definitely take a trip to Santa Fe, even if you take the bus. It's only an hour but you can literally spend all day there just walking around the square area and you will still have plenty to do. But Albuquerque has only a limited venue of possibilities. It is a more suburban town, very spread out. I've not spent any time at the U of NM in Alb. but it is a pretty campus and I'll bet you can find something to do there.
