Albany, NY to Myrtle Beach, SC - Avoiding Wash. DC
I need to travel from Albany, NY to Myrtle Beach, SC. I've done this in the past. I usually take 87 south to I-95 south. I don't mind the traffic or tolls through New Jersey, however, I HATE the Washington, DC traffic.
Any suggestions on a different route to avoid DC? Also, on the way back North it will be a Saturday. Will traffic be an issue then? Thanks. |
One option would be to switch over to the Garden State Hwy and go down to Cape May, take the ferry to Lewes DE then go down the DELMARVA to the bay bridge and on down 17 to Myrtle Beach.
Another would be to go over to 81 down to 77 then east on 20 and a bunch of small SC roads to Myrtle. Option one has lots of tolls, get a transponder, option 2 does not. Both avoid DC, but will be scenic in places and longer than 95. |
Another option... From I-87 to I-287 to NJ Turnpike over the Memorial Bridge to Delaware to I-95 to exit 4 and go south on US-13 to Bridge Tunnel to Norfolk. Then south to I-64 to US 17 south to MB. Not knowing what part of MB you're heading to consider getting off US-17 a bit after entering South Carolina take route 9 north a mile or so and then route 31 to bypass North MB.
