Alaska/Yukon tour company recommendations?

Does anyone know of a company that offers packaged tours of Alaska that include part of the Yukon - at least Dawson City? Whitehorse is probably too far away for tour companies to care about, but I hear that Dawson City, and surrounds, are great to visit. Thanks for any ideas you might have. Jim

I fly there from Fairbanks. If you don't have a lot of time, it is a very slow trip via bus through some less scenic areas. Air North has flights there several times per week. From there you can then do more touring. Other option would be to get with a rental car company out of Fairbanks that will allow the drive there. Last choice for me would be a bus.

Dawson is great and worth a couple of days, especially if you can manage to get up the Klondike into the (still functioning) gold country. Be prepared for conflicting experiences - magnificent scenery, historic artifacts - and some of the most impressive/depressing environmental desolation you're ever going to see. From the air especially, the view of the "hand of man" (mainly tailings and waste from a century of mining) in the Yukon/Klondike valleys is astonishing.

Air North, which serves Fairbanks, is the principal carrier. www.flyairnorth.com. http://www.dawsoncity.org has good links to places to stay, all that.

Whitehorse, actually, is considerably easier to get to than Dawson. For my money, though (what's left of it after a night at Diamond Tooth Gerties) Dawson way more fascinating.

Fly there - more time in the area and less on lousy, dangerous roads.

If you happen to be taking a cruise- Whitehorse is easy from your port in Skagway. Avis is the only major rental with 2 independents. It's 125 miles each way, but significantly less scenery the last 50 miles. There is a Harley shop there- which I have hauled back several tshirts. :)

Worldwide Country Tours has a 14 day Alaska-Yukon Territory package, starting with a 3 day Inside Passage cruise from Vancouver, stopping in Juneau and docking at Skagway, then you pick up the motorcoach/train tour. Im not sure if they go to Dawson City. You can get more information and a detailed itin at www.countrytours.com

I do not recommend the 3/4 day cruises- land tour add ons. You see more on the 7 day cruise (you miss either the glacier viewing or a great port) and from Skagway- you have way too much time on a bus with so so scenery in areas.
