Alaska Railroad trips reviews & motion sickness etc

Looking in the Alaska Railroad site I noticed that they have a 2 day 1 night tour From Anchorage to Seward that includes:

Coastal Classic Train – Anchorage to Seward roundtrip

Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise (5 hours)

Overnight at the Best Western Edgewater

Visit to the Alaska SeaLife Center

Dog sled ride

lunch at an Alaskan roadhouse

Exit Glacier Tour (5 hour)

Price: $635 Adventure Class or GoldStar Service: $785

When trying to itemize the costs I get a very similar price, just wondering if someone has taken this trip before and if it is worth it. I will only have 2 full free days, Friday & Saturday before my flight departs on Sunday morning. Also for previous whale watching trips I got motion sickness. I’m not sure if it will be worth the expense to get a cruise like this if I’ll probably get sick. Im really interested in glaciers more than whale watching. Any suggestions are welcome!

Regards to the train ride Anchorage - Seward: have done both Adventure Class and GoldStar Service. It is a great ride. We found both options enjoyable, but the GoldStar Service was really worth the extra $$$, in our opinion.

What costs? Driving to and from the areas, or going a la carte on the train?

The train is not cheap, and it's not quick. You'll save 1/4 to 1/3 of the travel time if you drive. The train primarily follows the road on Anchorage-Seward and that's a good drive. Others on this board have noted that the trip from Anchorage to Denali is NOT particularly scenic.

Thanks for the responses! When I said "itemize" I meant when I tried to do everything on my own, ie. buying cruise tickets, tours, reserving room in the hotel, and the train rides as I dont drive.

What I'm thinking is taking the train on Friday morning and returning Saturday night, so the AlaskaRailroad 2 day 1 night trip looks like a good option for my time frame but Im not sure if it is worth it.

Its hard to say if you will get seasick on the Kenai Fjords tour. There is a section on open ocean that can be rough, although the day we did it it was clear as glass.

That said, I think the 5 hour cruise may not get you all the way to the glaciers...unless it is a high speed boat? I was under the impression one needed to do the 7-9 hour cruise to see the best glaciers. The shorter ones are more focused on wildlife. Its still beautiful, and I think worthwhile.

Is there a similar tour offered that lets you do the Whittier 26 Glacier cruise? that might suit you better.

If you'd like to see a few pictures, you can check my blog. this is the section from our Kenai Fjords tour.

Motion sickness is in the inner ear of the beholder. My kids feel nothing. I get it when on a powered boat even with a dramamine (thanks Mom) and have to pop outside for fresh air no matter what. But I'm still going on boat tours next time I go to Alaska.

Your non-driving means a package may well be better than going a la carte. Try to book extra time in Seward at the end/before the tour.
