Alaska question....Homer or Cordova?
You all are such a big help to us newbies! Thank you in advance. My husband and I took our first cruise to Alaska 4 years ago for our 25th anniversary (and we are hooked! But with our kid's college tuition we are just now returning next year). Budgetqueen was such a big help to us. I hope that I thanked you, but since I had a teenager living here and I got LITTLE computer time I probably did not! But thank you!
Now to the question! We are flying in to Anchorage...still working on our agenda. Looking at spending 2 days in Danali 2-3 days in Valdez Then Homer or now Cordova Spending alot of time driving I realize, but we saw alot on our cruise, glaciers, went Salmon fishing, a whale watching tour...did I say we saw ALOT of glaciers? HA! We are not BIG hikers, and beleive it or not love driving...go figure! We wanted to spend some time in Homer, but I am very interested in Cordova..yes it is hard to get to but I think I have that worked out. We are interested in fishing and just a laid back atmosphere and they seem to have a little of everything. Could you smart people give me some insight on the two please. While I realize I am not posting my full agenda here (will soon) this may shake some things up a bit and I will have to make some changes. Again thank you to all of you that spend your time here and help us! Courtney |
I don't know anything about Cordova, but we absolutely loved Homer. I sat on our porch overlooking the spit for hours and never got tired of the view.

I, too, loved Homer. That would be my preference.

I'll throw in another vote for Homer. Nice location, good food and shops...

Cordova has far fewer amenities for tourists than Homer. The high cost of getting there (ferry/planes only) makes it a tough sell for most visitors. Yes, it's quite beautiful, but no more so than many other (more accessible) towns in Alaska. I've never personally found it especially laid back, particularly in the commercial fishing season (manic was more like it) but your mileage may vary. [Part of my perception is from the first time I was at the Alaskan Bar in Cordova when somebody started shooting off a gun and I realized I was the only (other) person not down on the floor under the tables. Conditioned response from the locals, I guess.]
