Alaska -public transport
Hello,
we (4 guys from Germany) want to do a packrafting trip on the Susitna River beginning more or less on the height of the Susitna lodge, which is situated beneath the road Nr. 8 connecting Cantwell with Paxson. Has anybody an idea how we can arrive their? We know until now, that there are flights. Is there any public bus transportation? I have not found any website yet. Perhaps could you give me an advice. Thank you very much Gregor |
In my experience, public transportation is a pretty unknown concept in Alaska. But perhaps one of the Alaskan fodorites may have better information.

There's no public transportation that will get you there. You'll need to drive or arrange a charter flight.

Paxon is along the Denali Highway. These guys can probably help you when you arrive in a rental car.

Hallo Gregor,
I have good news for you, but your post is utterly confusing. Susitna Lodging is in Talkeetna, far away from Cantwell, Paxson and Highway No. 8. But Talkeetna has a station of the Denali Star that arrives from Anchorage. From the station to the lodge and river it is about 500 meters. https://www.alaskarailroad.com/ |
Like t-1959 I am also confused.
Susitna RIver Lodge is in Talkeetna (about a 200 mile drive from where you are planning on entering the river). I cannot locate any lodge on the Susitna River at bridge on the Denali Hwy. The bridge you are referring to is at mile 80 and the two closet accomodations I canfind are Alpine Creek Lodge (mile 68) and Gracious House Lodge (mile 82). Public transportation... - there will be no form of public transportation that goes there. If you tell us (readers) more about your trip (dates, when/where you arrive, other itinerary items, etc.), then we might be able to offer better ideas to help you best organize things. |
