They are so different and yet so beautiful it's hard to recommend one over another.
If I had to pick with the amount of time you have, I'd take Alaska. If you have a car or are on a tour you can see so much in a week. Yellowstone is wonderful, but having been to both multiple times, if I only have a week, it's Alaska.

I think with your time frame you can do more justice to the Yellowstone area than Alaska.

Yellowstone. Alaska is so big that while it is magnificent, you spend a lot of time just getting from one place to another.

You can't do justice to "Alaska" in nine days. Heck, we couldn't do justice to it in the TWELVE days we were there, and we averaged 200 miles a day driving each day!

Eight to nine days would be about right for a trip to Yellowstone, Tetons, and Glacier; although the latter may be "a park too far" if you have young children in a car.

What are the cities you are going to? If you will be on the west coast I would pick Alaska,it is just incredible. If you are on the east coast then I would say Yellowstone because Alaska would be twice as far. There is no wrong choice here as both are spectacular. However, if you do go to Yellowstone include Grand Teton NP as it is so close. Then when you are admiring the grand teton mountain range picture that Alaska has mountain range after mountain range, many crashing straight into the bluest ocean you have ever seen, for as far as you can see and beyond.

What month is this going to be? And if it is this year, Yellowstone accomadations are hard to get. You will want to book a year in advance.

I would probably choose Yellowstone. If you don't like crowds go in Mid-June or go to Alaska. Yellowstone is the "Total Package". Alaska is much more expensive, much more difficult to get from point to point. But the beauty is unsurpassed. You will see wildlife at both places. If you go to Alaska, I think a person need to take at least two bush plane or helicopter rides to remote locations.

I agree both are magnificent - Yellowstone is great, however, I have been to Alaska 4 times and I will go back at the drop of hat -- love it -- their is so much to do -- and yes things are distant and require travel, but it is well worth it -- and I can guarantee you will want to go back. In my opinion I could go and see the same things --- and they will differ from one visit to the next -- the animals are unperdictable - but magnificinet.

Agree that you need to tell us when you will be traveling, where else you will be going and who/how many of you there are.

Alaska's tourist season is short and it might not be the best choice with very small kids. However, Yellowstone, while more accessible and having a longer season, does tend to be mobbed and finding a place to stay can be a real challenge.
