I have done both.
I would say Alaska is better for doing a cruise if you are set on that for your honeymoon. For Hawaii I think that is a better place for getting a hotel/condo on the beach and just enjoying where you are. |
If you want adventure and outdoor activites, Alaska is it. If you want to rest, relax, lay out in the sun and a more romantic setting - choose Hawaii. Alot of younger people choose Hawaii. Hawaii was my favorite destination (been 4 times) until this year when we went to Alaska. Now Alaska tops the list!

i'm more of a romantic person- so i'll say Hawaii ( i also really like all the lava) , but if you're into trekking and animal viewing than Alaska is the place..
hopefully my next Hawaii vacation will be as good as the last one:) i'm checking out ideas and hotels at http://www.tripcart.com/usa-regions/...ig-Island.aspx |
Congratulations to you. I spent my honeymoon in Hawaii and just celebrated my 25th in Alaska. I loved them both and for many of the same reasons. I love views of high cliffs going down into the ocean, lush mountains, and tall waterfalls--I've never seen any of those in Florida, but I have on some of the Carribean Islands. And in Alaska there are also snow-capped peaks and glaciers behind those high cliffs. Like gardyloo says some of the Hawaiian cruises have not had the best reviews, but I can't speak to that--we've always done land based trips--so check cruisecritic.com or this site.
Whichever you choose you will love the scenery and this will be the first of many trips together in your future. Enjoy! |
If you're looking for scenery unlike Florida, and it's a cruise, better go for Alaska. You won't be disappointed.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Since it sounds like you and your soon to be DH are definitely looking for a cruise I would go with Alaska. The Hawaiian islands are all different and really need time on land to eplore. I would not recommend a cruise for Hawaii. An inside passage cruise to Alaska will get you plenty of scenery, but you might find the wildlife lacking. We saw many whales, but not much else on our cruise. If you really want to see wildlife I second the poster who recommended a side trip to Denali. If your budget will allow it splurge on a balcony room on the port side of the ship for cruising Glacier Bay.
You can't go wrong with either choice. If you need some visual aids here is a link to my Alaska and Hawaii pictures. Good luck and happy traveling! http://community.webshots.com/user/annaparks |
I wanted to ask jetsel.1 about lodging in either Soldotna or Kenai on the way to Homer...We are going the end of July and into Aug. 2007 and need one night. I've just planned the trip - very time consuming, but I love it. I've only been to Alaska one time - No cruise for us. I like to see the land and not from a large vessel.
The Caribbean cruises are fine, but not Alaska. My mind couldn't mix getting dressed up in Alaska on a cruise ship and wanting to see whales up close. We have lived in Hawaii - so I'd say promise yourself that you will do both excursions. One for your honeymoon and one later...They are totally different!!! I also think it is what you are looking for - |
Been to Hawaii staying in a condo and taken the inside passage of Alaska by one week cruise from Seattle. Both have merits.
I am not sure why you want to cruise. Is it because you like having one place to stay and the amenities of a cruise ship at your fingertips? If so, I'd suggest you consider a land based trip, staying in a resort. Hawaii is much more beautiful than Florida, though Alaska is more different. Check out the Hyatt in Kauaii, for a good resort. It's not cheap, but I'd guess wouldn't be more than a cruise with excursions. I suggest this because you say you don't want to spend your time relaxing on a ship, but want to see the sights. Distances are great in Alaska and the cruise ship spends a lot of time at sea and only a little time in ports. It was very frustrating for me. There was so much more I wanted to see and do everywhere we went and we were back on the ship before I could turn around. Our cruise was in June and the sea lions were calving so access to some places in Glacier Bay were restricted. We spent an entire day sitting on the ship in front of two glaciers waiting for them to do something. The sea lions may have been calving, but the glaciers were not. It was not too exciting. (We had seen glaciers plenty of times, so this, in itself, was not particularly novel) The weather was mostly overcast with some mist and sprinkles. I might have been frustrated had I expected much sunshine or great distant views. We kayaked in the rain, but we're used to it... You could luck out, but be prepared for similar weather in the inside passage in June. I did enjoy Alaska, though, and we want to go back, but our next trip will be by car where we can spend more time exploring. If I were to visit the inside passage again, I would either take the state ferry or fly in and out of ports. Hope I'm not confusing things too much. |
