It's a big state. In the southeastern panhandle it will probably be getting pretty rainy; in the southcentral area (Anchorage etc.) it will be autumn and chilly but still potentially nice (also can be cold, but not wintry until later in the month); in the interior pretty much the same picture but with a greater chance of cold/wintry weather a little earlier than areas near to the salt water; in the north it will be cold; in the west it will be getting colder but not necessarily frozen; in the southwest and Aleutians it will be stormy, but that's pretty much the year-round scene out there.

I don't think it's ever too cold to visit Alaska, but you might not agree. What's your cut-off point?

We are open to where to go. I'm taking my husband on a trip for his 40th birthday. Been to Aruba 3 times in 2 years, I was just looking for something different. I think we'll wait until summer to visit Alaska.

I spent the last two weeks of September 2000 on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage. The weather was fine - a couple of days of rain - but when we left it was starting to get cold. Everything was pretty much half price after Sep 15, and very few places we wanted to see were closed.

There is a huge difference between Sept and Oct in most parts of Alaska. Most tourist attractions, lodges and B&Bs except in Anchorage close at or before the end of Sept. So maybe you could move your trip up to early September and make it an early birthday present.
