alaska in early may

Fellow Fodorites,

I was hoping to know whether a trip to alaska from 4-11 may would be well timed in terms of weather and access to natural parks.

From cruises/rail tour schedules it seems a week or two early and one of the previous posts had mentioned that the interiors of denali may be closed.

This being my second attempt at a last minute trip to alaska....I do not have problems with it being cold; i hope its not cold and closed!

Thanks.....

A great time to visits if you like lots of snow.
The south part of Alaska (Kenai Fjords National Park) might be your best bet, but their season doesn't begin until late May. http://www.nps.gov/kefj/planyourvisit/index.htm

You can visit Denali National Park all year round, but they recommend traveling around by dogsled or ski anytime other than between mid-may and Mid-September. http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/hours.htm

Thanks Bill H and sdbeach...looks like Alaska may have to wait for another last minute vacation attempt!

That timeframe, IF looking at Denali NOPE, you won't get very far in at all. Lucky if you get the public road 15 miles.
