alabama overnight trip
We are looking for an overnight trip within the state of alabama. We are from just south of Birmingham. We have spent lots of time at the alabama gulf coast, so we don't want to go back there. Any other suggestions? I see that in Florence the Frank Lloyd Wright home is now open for tours--has anyone been, and is there anything else to do up there? Any neat places to stay in Alabama--neat or romantic?

I'd suggest visiting the space Center in Huntsville if you haven't been already. On the way there or back, you could drive through Guntersville, right on the lake, and enjoy a swim at the state park there -- or just have a fried catfish meal in one of the restaurants. And not too far away is the neat town of Hartselle, with a charming downtown and lots of antique shops.
Another good spot is Lake Martin north of Montgomery -- again, nice lake with all kinds of water sports, and plenty of motels in the area to pick from. |
Gorham's Bluff is a romantic bed and breakfast in northeast Alabama that is great for a quick get-away. It overlooks the Tennesse river and has beautiful scenery. You can ride bikes, fish, or just be lazy. Also, the dinner is wonderful. It doesn't have any musems or tours, but I highly reccommend it for an overnight trip. The website is gorhamsbluff.com.

How about the Natchez Trace -north or south from you?

Another idea for a "natural" trip is Little River Canyon, just beyond Ft Payne in No Alabama. You can stay at the Desoto State Park lodge or cabins and eat there and during the day, drive along with parkway, hike the trails, see waterfalls, etc. It is just beautiful there.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. They have been very helpful.
