Airport security allowance for babies
i am travelling to hawaii from dallas tomorrow. its an 8 hr flight. i will be flying american airlines. i called up their information service and they said i cannot take water for preparing formula for the baby. i need to buy it after security clearance. my baby drinks whole milk and i am wondering if i can buy the individual milk boxes for him. will that be allowed? he is one yr old. i am taking other stuff like yogurt and fruit and snacks for the flight....i hope thats ok with security. i have talked to different people and everyone has something new to say.
i have not travelled for a very long time so i do not have much idea about how the security scenario was after the latest scare. i am trying not to take any other liquid, gels, tubed meds etc, but i need to carry milk in some form for the baby. |
(besides prescriptions and a few other exceptions) liquids/gels except for baby formula have to be 3 oz or smaller containers and all fit in a 1 qt baggie.
I don't think whole milk qualifies. You'd have to buy it and water after security. Yogurt also would be considered a "liquid" so you probably have to buy it after security too. |
Firefly, it's not the airline, it's TSA security who can answer your question.
This is what I found on the website http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...n/formula.shtm "When traveling with a child, in the absence of suspicious activity or items, greater than 3 ounces of baby formula or breast milk are permitted through the security checkpoint in reasonable quantities for the duration of your itinerary" There are other rules, I advise you to spend some time reading this website. |
DFW should have plenty of places to buy milk. McDonalds has individual milk (although, I don't know if they carry whole anymore.) Starbucks has whole milk, but usually pours it into a glass with a lid. Most likely any of the fast food places and the regular stores will have milk and water.
Have a WONDERFUL trip!!! |
i did read the TSA website but they dont talk about milk. but again its a liquid food so they might not agree. i have msdonald in mind also. if they take away the milk boxes, i will buy from mcdonald -- i dont care if the baby drinks 2% milk for the flight duration.
thanks for letting me know, yogurt doesnt get inside the back pack either now. i dont think pediasure ( i have a 6yr old too) will be allowed either. can i take fruit cups? i know i am allowed fresh fruit, but i am assuming no no to fruit cups, right? |
fireflyparents:
I would call TSA I really don't think you'll have a problem with yogurt, but, you do want to be on the safe side call them up, it will take a little of your time but will clear all your questions. (I called them yesterday, with a question of my own) have a great trip. Gina |
FROM TSA.GOV regarding carry-on food:
Jell-O's Yes - 3 oz. or smaller container Pudding Yes - 3 oz. or smaller container Whipped cream Yes - 3 oz. or smaller container Yogurt or gel like food substances Yes - 3 oz. or smaller container Regarding milk: Declare larger liquids. Prescription medications, baby formula and milk (when traveling with an infant or toddler) are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Beverages brought from home or purchased before reaching the security checkpoint in a 3 oz. or smaller container and in your quart-size, zip-top plastic bag. Yes Canned or jarred goods such as soup, sauces, peanut butter, fruits, vegetables and jellies Yes - 3 oz. or smaller container For other TSA info regarding travel with children: http://www.tsa.dhs.gov/travelers/air...ren/index.shtm |
to clarify what I meant - the yogurt and milk are considered liquids and CAN be taken through security but only in 3 oz or smaller sizes and all must fit into a 1 qt ziplok. Those products are usually much larger than 3 oz. so get them after security

I think the TSA website is quite clear that it has to be baby formula or BREAST milk. Whole milk is not mentioned anywhere in the "traveling with kids" section.
Regarding the last line of your first post: You can absolutely do carry-on with medicine. Just keep them in their original container in a separate bag (we do the clear bigger ziploc bag) and show them to the screener before putting the bag in the bin. We travel with a little one and we've done it on several occasion since the new rule. It's also clearly stated on the TSA website. Good luck. |
Again, to repeat[from TSA.gov]:
Declare larger liquids. Prescription medications, baby formula and milk (when traveling with an infant or toddler) are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Look in supermarket dairy section, there are very small yogurt cups made for kids that are under 3 oz. limit. |

THANKS EVERYONE for all the posts. this mightbe my last post before travelling. i am calling TSA right now, but i think i got the picture. worse to worse, i will throw away everything and buy them all over after security check.
wish us luck! |
Besides the restaurants along the gates, your plane will have milk. Your child should be fine with other liquids too, right?
Faina, I laughed when I read the post about approved ounces of breast milk. I know they were referring to expressed but my mind went elsewhere like...what are they going to do, weigh a woman's breast? Nope, honey, that's too heavy, you've got to express two ounces from it before we allow you to proceed to the gate. |
Hi guys, back from Hawaii and just wanted to update about how much i was allowed to carry. i had bought 3 8oz single packs of milk for baby. I also had 2 yogurt and 2 fruit cups. everything was allowed to be carried in. The only thing i had to buy was water after checking in. While coming back I was allowed to do the same again. They did ask me about the duration of the flight and the total travel time was more than 14hrs and they did not say a word. The only thing they objected to was 3 oz of water in my elder son's backpack.
SO i guess as long as they are satisfied with your travel time and the age of the little one, they do not object. I did put every liquid I was carrying in small zip loc bags and showed them to TSA guys during security check. Hopefully this will help other confued mothers like me :) My trip was excellent. Gonna write a TR soon -- specially about travelling on a budget with a baby. Thank you everyone for all the info and support so far. |
