Anyone else struck by the inconsistencies in the system? This past weekend at SFO, 3/ 21, security examined my Apple Powerbook, but not me, my shoes or my carry-on luggage. No alert on the metal detector. At LAX two days laters, I set off the detector (same shoes, watch), they scanned me, sent my shoes through a separate xray and searched my carry-on including my toiletries. What I found particularly strange was that in searching my luggage at LAX, they paid attention to my toiletries, but completely ignored the bag which contained the power adaptor, mouse, IMic and ethernet cable which I would have thought would arose some curiosity. Very puzzling.

<BR><BR>I've been saying ever since 9/11 that the system has been inconsitent. <BR><BR>Yes, I know - the government is now in charge of things, and before it was in the hands of a number of private companies.<BR><BR>But I'm still seeing inconsitent treatment, as SAB has illustrated. I'm not sleeping better at night because of it.

The Big Brother is watching. And He knows your Apple was searched already. Be afraid, be very afraid!

Jack--The inconsistencies don't scare me -- I don't expect to be made completely safe. In fact it wouldn't prevent me from flying if we had pre 9/11 security levels. It just seems to be that the security measures are more cosmetic than real, and they are costing the airlines a fortune.

Cute Faina --security didn't actually open my powerbook, but for some reason (maybe it's the Titanium) they felt the need to wipe it.

Not all airports have the new highly triggered metal detectors. I imagine from what you wrote, SFO does not and LAX does.

When I flew out of Las Vegas recently they did not even look in my lead bag to make sure it was camera film that I was carrying. That was kinda scary as they usually don't just take my word for it.

last week at LAX, a box of fudge caused a scanner to need to inspect it because it was so dense the xray didn't show anything but a solid rectangle. No, there were no free samples.
