Airline Routes DC to NY
Looking for flight for my daughter between DC and New Youk in Aug. What discount airlines fly this route? Joe
|
Southwest (DCA to LGA), JetBlue, Spirit. I would also check on travelocity and expedia using alternate airports such as Dulles and 3 NY airport options.
|
Actually, neither SW, Spirit, nor JetBlue fly DCA to LGA.
This route is highly competitive with AA, USAir, and Delta all flying hourly shuttle flights from DCA to LGA at ~$250rt. United flies IAD to LGA for about the same price. With the hourly shuttle, you have a seat reserved on a specific flight, but if you show up early they'll put you on the next flight, pending seat availability. Works quite well if you just have carry on luggage (as does everyone on the plane) |
J62 is correct. You can sometimes get cheaper flights out of Dulles, but rarely super cheap. I recntly priced a flight from DCA to JFK for about $150, but that was unusually low.
There's also always Amtrak, which is usually going to be cheaper if you don't take Acela. |
Use WAS and NYC when you search for fares and you will see multiple airports for each point. WAS= IAD, DCA, BWI and NYC=EWR, LGA, JFK.
No sense in limiting to budget carriers on this route or any other. jetBlue doesn't fly WAS-NYC and neither does Southwest. Too bad, the usairways website has recently changed, to be like America West. |
I would suggest Amtrack as probably the easiest way to get from DC to NYC, with security lines, check in, an hour flight and more often than not delays due to weather and time of day, Amtrack very often turns out to be the simple option to flying. The trip takes about 3 hours and is very comfortable. There is a dining car for sandwiches and snacks. The train arrives at Penn Station in the heart of Manhattan, and you can get a cab or subway from there.
Hope she has a great time while here. |
I must agree - by the time you add in the time, cost, and hassle factors, including ground transportation at both ends, the train or even the bus start to look very attractive.

|
OP - I apologize for my very incorrect into - I have no idea where my brain was, but it was not operating correctly.

Go to kayak.com Search for all DC airports and all NYC airports. For an arbitrary date in June, I saw RT fares of $169 on both Delta and AA into LGA. Unless she's going to Long Island, don't pick an ISP (Islip) option for the NY airport.

Don't laugh at the Chinatown bus! Departure locations can be very convenient; DC's Chinatown is tiny and near the convention center; some of the NYC buses are based in the Penn Station midtown area, rather than downtown in Chinatown. The hassle factor is soooo much less than flying!

I would like to thank all of you folks for the help. Gail I thought it so kind of you to apologize for the miss quote. It appears the train is the best way to get to New York from DC, time wise and price is reasonable. Again thank you for all the information. Joe Rice
