Airfares way up!!!!!!!

Was looking for airfares to Miami in June and they seem to be sooo high!! Will they come down in a month or so?????

Fairhope Feb 24th, 2005 06:00 AM

At $51 a barrel for oil--I don't think so

Intrepid1 Feb 24th, 2005 07:37 AM

Where are you flying from? Call George and complain, OK?

jlm_mi Feb 24th, 2005 08:11 AM

What is soooo high? I'm seeing Detroit to Miami under $300 for June. I wouldn't expect any lower for that route, unless a short-term sale happened to pop up.

Little_Man Feb 24th, 2005 08:19 AM

they may not come down this year, but I'd still wait a month or so. Just a bit early for any specials...

Crude oil prices are up and airlines are adjusting plane sizes to meet demand.

Airlines are no longer flying big planes on routes just because they used to. Low pax = smaller plane.

Airlines are flying more efficiently and commanding higher prices.

Yeah, where are you flying from? I was just checking fares from SFO to Miami and West Palm for June and they were waaay lower than usual. Under $300, as opposed to about $450 last year.

dwooddon Feb 24th, 2005 09:18 AM

I don't think they are that high. Within the last week, I booked an open-jaw trip from Salt Lake City to New Orleans and From Washington DC back to Salt Lake City for $369.80 on the United web site. I also booked a three city flight, Las Vegas to San Francisco to Anchorage back to Las Vegas for $545.20, also on the UAL web site.

I could easily have paid more - you just have to shop for a combination of route and times you're willing to fly for a price you're willing to pay.

I feel your pain, char1755. Last night I was checking fares from San Antonio to Naples, Florida--didn't find anything under $400.

Do you have to fly into Miami. I know several of the low cost carriers like Independence Air fly into Fort Lauderdale which is close by.

cdt Feb 24th, 2005 10:14 AM

We fly from upstate NY and fares to Fort Lauderdale are ALWAYS lower than Miami - even on major carriers.

Often West Palm Beach is also lower.

char1755 Feb 24th, 2005 10:53 AM

Yes, flying into Ft. Lauderdale is lower - I will look for rates into that airport.

flyert Feb 24th, 2005 12:36 PM

That's a good point. West Palm Beach is also less expensive than Miami. Independence Air just started going there for me as well which is good. It is not a close as Fort Lauderdale but worth looking into.

We have reservations from Pennsylvania to Tampa in June through expedia for 150.00 per ticket. Sometimes you get better deals if you try buying them in the middle of the night. I have no clue why. I tried the same flights in March and the prices were sky high due to spring break. good luck.

Hope you saw "today only" fares on AA to MX.

Ditto the comments that Ft Laud is cheaper than Miami. We fly quite a bit to Dallas, Denver, Seattle and Los Angeles and fares are always cheaper (usually by $50 or more) from Ft. Lauderdale.

We are lucky to be halfway between both airports. Ft Laud has undergone tremendous growth in the last few years and actually handles more domestic traffic now than Miami does.

However, if you are heading to the Caribbean or Central/South America, fares and availability are much better from Miami.

Also it pays to be flexible. We tried to get 4 tickets to Orlando from Boston for the week of our April school vacation. Cost was between $1200 and $1500. Decided to go the Wed. of vacation til the following Tues. Cost was $600.

amwosu Feb 25th, 2005 10:37 AM

Indy to Denver for July was $200 a week ago and in the past few days all the carriers have bumped them to over $300...

patg Feb 25th, 2005 11:29 AM

I usually find the best deals on United and AA 5-8 weeks before my trip. They seem to hold "fare sales" about every two months. If you're a FF member, you can post a fare watch on the AA website.
