Airfares to Hawaii

Going to Kauai in mid-November, unfortunately has to be on Sunday. Currently the best fares I see are $475 each on Hawaiian from SFO. American and United are about $650 each.

Are these consistent fares or do they go "on sale" perodically?
Thanks for the help.

I think that's pretty good for a weekend departure. Maniacal bargain hunters may disagree, but $475 is not bad at all, especially considering sometimes $650 is an average. And there are always fare sales that pop up, but a lot of times they can be restrictive about travel dates, ie, midweek only. You should subscribe to the airlines' email notices.

We've been watching certain fares for months and they haven't budged. We finally went ahead and paid $629 from SFO to HNL on United for July. $475 is a bargain compared to that. The airlines are pretty up front as to whether or not they expect their airfares to fluctuate. United told us that fare would not go down.

Many airlines have cut the number of flights and as a result the planes are filling more quickly. We checked United's web site and the flight we wanted was indeed three-fourths full and that's when we decided to go ahead and buy our tickets. The waiting and watching our case resulted in seats near the back of the plane; for the same price we could have gotten much better seats if we'd purchased them sooner.

mmr41: $475 is a good price from SFO. Fares have gone up the past few months, last January we paid $398/pp for United, SFO to Kona.

Fares do fluctuate depending on demand, but I wouldn't look for yours to go much lower. The only way to beat it would be with a chartered flight (e.g. Suntrips), or find a travel agent who contracts with one of the larger tour companies in the Bay Area. These tour companies typically buy large blocks of seats at a time and the discounts are usually substantial. In October 2002 we paid $242 r/t from SFO to KOA for a United flight. Same plane, same seats, at about half the price.

Thanks for all the guidance. I'm used to playing the European airfare game and wasn't familiar with flucuations (if any) to hawaii.

Booked today $954.78 for two on Hawaiian, fortunately we can get FF miles on American.

Aloha!!!

As fuel prices go up I would expect the same with the airfares. Just a thought

Airfares are indeed going up. I have an August Hawaiian vacation booked w/ Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays. I was notified by my travel agent, that I have to pay in full by Mon. 5/17 or our package will go up due to fuel increases (I have to pay the full package now because it's an entire package... they can't pull the airfare only out).

Seems airfares to Hawaii are high for travel first week of June through the end of August, regardless of how early you book. We used FF miles last year for July and booked 3 mos early, had to use double miles. This year we're going in a couple weeks, fare was $280 rt and has been that way for months on Hawaiian Airlines.com.

As fdecarlo said, some travel companies offer great deals. I referred my friend to one advertised on travelzoo, ad sounded too good to be true but they got their tickets for about $400 rt each departing LAX to HNL and returning out of OGG in the beginning of August.

Also noticed last year, many sales started popping up at end of August for fall travel.

I know you already booked your flight. Just in case others are looking for ggod fares to Hawaii from San Francisco area try:

www.pleasantholidays.com

For November they show $439 R/T total.

I was able to locate a fare for $400.64. This is for traveling in mid November on a Sunday, returning Friday. Your travel dates might be different, but just thought that i'd share that info.

Aloha

WE booked our airfare to Maui through Funjet. After doing tons of research it seemed like the best deal.

We bought a 'vacation' including a convertible and direct flights on United to Maui (from SFO) for $1300.

Sounded great to us!

Forgot to mention that we're travelling June 27-July 4th.

I recently posted about my family's up and down vacation plans regarding Hawaii. During the time period when I was first searching fares, I "did" run across bargains in April before our plans were put on "hold". During the time period I was "in waiting", fare alerts would still come and I noticed most of the deals either ended in early June or started at the tail end of August.

Tuesday, our plans went back on "go" and I was rather shocked to see how high the fares were. I played around with the dates and found a fare we could live with and went ahead and bought our tickets. We went with AA since we had travel vouchers to apply to the cost. Like Jayne11159 discovered, the seats on our flight were practically gone. We're also sitting in one of the last rows, but I'm grateful for that because according to AA's seating chart, those were the LAST seats available that could keep my family together. The rest of the seats are not just scattered about, but there are only about 4 left in coach! I played around with flight numbers of other flights which were also one-stop, non-red eye and they're pretty much full too.

Earlier this year, I read an article that predicted this year's summer travel would be heavy with Hawaii being singled out as one of the hot spots. Toss in higher airfare and I guess we're seeing the results: HIGH airfare. I guess this year when you see an airfare to Hawaii you're willing to live with, TAKE IT.
