From midwest - would it be horrible to take a 10 year old to Hawaii on airplane for spring break

Scarlett Jun 19th, 2003 09:08 AM

LOL
only if you make him/her wear a loud Print shirt and a lei around their neck!

It will be horrible if he kicks the back of my seat from Kansas to Hawaii.

We went to Hawaii when my youngest was about that age and we took the three older ones besides. We had a great trip but I doubt I would plan it for spring vacation. A week, traveling that far, is not very long. We usually go to Hawaii in the summer when we can stay between 14 and 16 days. Everyone knew when they boarded the plane that they were in for a long haul. It was worth it twice and they are lining up to go again. However, the oldest will have to go on his own next time.

Thank you for your response,
Where did you stay.
We have been to the Big Island twice and
Maui once, going on business trip to Kaui in September.
Can't think of a nicer place to take our
grandson, any other suggestions besides Hawaii that has worked for you.

Our son loved Jamaica. Plenty to do and the atmosphere was so casual and relaxed, all of us enjoyed it.
Southern California would be great, warm , Hollywood! Malibu!
Mexico?
What a fun time you will have :)

Yes, I remember how horrible I would have felt as a 10 year old if I got to go to Hawaii. If you ask me, you have the luckiest grandson in the world, and he will probably be more than thrilled to hop off to Hawaii while all his friends sit around the neighborhood and shovel snow.

With portable DVD's he won't even notice the flight. Of course planes are cool for kids. I have to take my daughter who is now three back and forth every few months. I think it's harder on the adults. They're the ones that get all the snacks and toys.

We took our kids to Hawaii when our son was 7 and daughter was 9. They both behaved very well and loved Hawaii. Take some books, Gameboy. The plane has interactive games also. That will keep him busy. Mine did, and they never complained on their flights to Hawaii.

My first trip to Hawaii was when I was 10, back in the days when a direct flight from Toronto took 13 hours. I think that trip is why we go back so much. Hawaii got into my dna somehow! We take our kids with us, my daughter's first trip was at 18 months, my son's at one year of age. We have invested in a great little portable DVD player as I don't always like them to watch what the airline has scheduled. It was $650 (canadaian dollars)at Best Buy. We just bring along headphones. I think a 10 year old would have a great time on spring break. We were in Maui this year around that time and it is a great time for kids to meet others and almost always make friends and have some one to play with at the pool or digging in the sand. (that way you can sit back, relax and simply enjoy) It is a long flight, but why not start them young!
