afternoon in Wilmington,NC
We will be traveling through Wilmington on our way south, and would like to spend an afternoon and early evening in downtown Wilmington. What are the "must see" historic buildings and sites?
I've read on this forum of the many good places to eat in that central area, so we'll probably go with one of those, that is, unless someone suggests someplace new. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and tips.

I used to live in Wilmington.
You can take a tour of the battleship, if you like that kind of thing. I think mostly you just need to walk around downtown. It's a small area and there is plenty to read on signs along the way, and it's nice just to look at all the beautiful houses in the historic area and along the river.
One of the most popular restaurants in the historic area is Cafe Phoenix. That's a great stop. There's also a Brewery that has good food (blanking on the name).

Thanks Michelle, We'll probably spend the afternoon walking around the historic area, and not do the battleship. The downtown area is supposedly very interesting and historic, and I've been wanting to see it. I love old architecture. We also really like the brewery idea. If it's downtown, we'll find it--asking people there, if need be. Kathy

Kathy,

I think you should reconsider seeing the USS North Carolina. I recently spent about 2-2 1/2 hours touring the ship. I found it fascinating.

You would still have lots of time for the rest of the "Historic" section which is right across the Cape Fear River from the battleship.

Dick

Thanks Dick, Maybe we will reconsider the battleship. It's very likely that my husband will want to do it, especially if they're that close together.
I'm also hoping on Oct 4, the day we'll be there, that it won't be too crazy or busy since on Oct 5 & 6 the city is having a Riverfest celebration in that area. I'd like to be able to walk around and see everything with minimal crowds. Just more pleasant for me that way. Kathy

Drive from Wilmington to Fort Fisher and check out the museum. From there, take the Ferry to Southport where you will pick 17 South back up.

Dee Dee. Thanks I don't know anything about Fort Fisher (museum), so I'll look up some information and consider it too. Kathy

Kathy, the Ferry ride is the best part of the trip. You drive your car on the ferry for something like $5 bucks and you get a wonderful boat ride. Have fun!
