affordable SF hotels convenient to art museums

We are thinking about SF in early January. Yikes, the hotels are expensive! Any suggestions about well-located hotels with free wifi that are potentially walkable from at least one of the major art museums? We'll be arriving (probably) by train and departing via the Oakland airport.

Thanks one and all.

Except for SF MOMA, none of the major museums is located near hotels (maybe boutique hotels, or b&bs, but not hotels).

De Young - in Golden Gate Park, not near any hotels
Legion of Honor - not really near anything and hard to get to without a car
SFMOMA, near ALL the Union Square area hotels. Also the easiest to get to from Oakland Airport

And yes, San Francisco hotels are VERY expensive, but you'll have to specify your budget if you want productive answers. What's affordable to you is not necessarily affordable to someone else, and vice versa.

1) We need to know what you consider 'affordable' - and actual $ number

2) Hotel rates can be VERY date specific due to major conventions. There are a couple of 20,000+ attendee conventions in the 2nd half of the month but I don't know of any biggies earlier in Jan. There is usually a lull right after the holidays.

I doubt you'll take this suggestion, but hostels are a good option in SF. January is "low season" and still probably at least $50 dollars a bed, so that gives you a good idea of where "affordable" starts on the low end. But the locations of most are excellent; free wifi, clean bathrooms, kitchen to cook in.

What's wrong with the 38 Geary bus, preferably the express?

They'll have luggage? (Otherwise, I freely admit I'm just not a bus person -- public transit is great as long as it's on rails).

There are (legal) Airbnb opportunities all over the city. Pick your museum and you'll find places nearby. Still expensive compared to other cities, but significantly more affordable than hotels and more privacy in general than hostels.

I can, however, recommend the hostel at Fort Mason, not close to major museums but walking distance to some good restaurants and other things to see. Both stays I had views of the Golden Gate from my bed.

I've stayed at The Andrews a few times (off Union Square). It's a reasonable price by SF standards.

Civic center hotels are close to Asian Arts museum, but the area is sketchy.

Do you have an iPhone to use Uber or Lyft? They also offer share rides, even cheaper.

It depends on which side of Van Ness.

if you get a car check out Parc55 as they often have room/car deals Otherwise to par a car with a hotel will cost you about 60.00 a day in SF. If you are a service person.retired or not check out the Marines Memorial. Often has SF reasonable pricing. Reasonable in SF could be very expensive to someone outside the area coming in for a stay.

You can take the bus out to Legion of Honor and probably to DeYoung as well but without luggage.

The Wharf may have cheaper pricing and there are several to choose from.
