Affordable NYC hotel

We're taking a trip to NYC and are going to be flying into LGA (more than likely) and want to stay close to everything where we can easily walk to things or hop onto the subway to get there. We'd like to be in a safe area.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What is affordable?

Ha! That's the big question....

Relatively speaking, I guess, for NYC.

Hotel rates vary a lot depending on time of year. When will you be going to NYC? The rate for a room for NYE can be several times higher than say, mid-Feb, for the same exact room.

Also, how many people is "we".

2 people in January.

I would start looking here:

There are some excellent deals on travelzoo.com for Jan. You should find lots of options. The rate at the brand new Hampton Inn Soho is very good although staying in Soho may not be your idea of central.

In Jan there should be huge deals on hotels - dirt cheap - try travelzoo.com
to see who has good deals.

Sights are way too spread out to walk to everything - esp in Jan when it will be cold, so you want to be near a subway. For central/ease of transit I would reco midtown west (but NOT Times Square), central park south or upper west side.

But none of the above three areas are among the cheapest in the city.

I guess I think you should pick a number and a comfort level and try to find something that fits. On my last search I couldn't make anything fit, but that was in October.

You ought to be able to get a good deal in January using Priceline. We were in NY in October and got the W Lexington Avenue for slightly less than 2/3 of the website price and could have saved even more if we had waited longer to make the reservation. Someone else mentioned in a trip report that for postage-stamp sized rooms, the full price (she paid $455 a night) was not worth it, and I agree, but definitely worth it for under $300 a night!

Agree that bidding on Priceline.com is a good bet--but check out biddingfortravel.com first to see what rooms are going for. Also, might be helpful to get a chancellable reservation and then keep bidding.

sometimes On the Avenue (Broadway & W 77th) has deals.
