Advices for summer trip to Alaska
 

Hi all! I find it very useful to read your advices about Alaska. Could you recommend me trips that I must do when in Glacier Bay, Denaly, Seward, Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks?
We'll spend four days in each place this July-August. What kind of clothes will we need? We come from south Spain, so we are used to very hot and dry summers.

Bring clothes and a rain jacket so you can dress in layers. If you take any boat trips it could be chilly on the water. I prefer a lightweight rain slicker from the sporting goods shop. My husband prefers a poncho. Make sure you have waterproof shoes if you might be hiking in wet places. On one trip it was very hot and dry in Alaska so you could need shorts/short sleeves or you could need turtleneck jerseys and sweaters under a fleece vest. If you need something while you are there (like my husband did) there are second hand stores as well as typical stores in Anchorage where you can buy clothing.

In Denali, take the shuttle bus to Wonder Lake and get off and on to hike. Go white water rafting, go on a ranger led hike, visit the dogs, etc.

In Seward, take a fjords boat trip, hike to Exit Glacier or Harding Ice Field or Lost Lake, visit the Sea Life Center.

In Juneau, go whale watching, take the tram or hike up Mt Roberts etc.

Take a small boat trip in Glacier Bay.

I recommend a hike on the loop trail at Mendenhall Glacier, a short bus ride outside Juneau.

We hiked it in early August and lucked out with a sunny 80F day.

Though it was warm enough for shorts that day, the wind whipping off the glacier was quite cool. Dress in layers.

I am from Fairbanks. The summers here are warm one day (80) it is like Europe-no air conditioning and then cold (50) the next. Bring clothes to dress in layers.

We went White water Rafting on the Nenana at Denali the other day. It was over cast so it was cold. We had on pants and sweat shirts. Even with the dry suits they have to keep you dry we were freezing by the time it was over. The water is off of the glaciers and snow melt. It sprays you and you will get cold.

Today has been warm and sunny in Fairbanks. There have been intermittant rain showers all around us.

My favorite places for Fairbanks are the University Museum, Pioneer park, Dicovery Cruise on the Chena River, Gold Paning at either the Gold Dredge #8 or the Eldorado Gold mine.

The sun does not set this time of year so you can take midnight walks and enjoy the scenery 24 hours a day.
