Advice please 1st time visitor, NYC
 

Would the New York Inn Hotel on 8th Ave between 46th and 48th Street be suitable place for 1st time visitor to stay?? Walkable to alot of the major "must sees"?? Thank you for any help....

The only place I could find any reviews of it was in Citysearch - one gave it a 1 out of 10 and the other person gave it a 10 - go figure. I'm in the neighborhood frequently and wouldn't dream of staying at this place. It appears to be an old SRO hotel (single room occupant - sort of a transient housing for wino's with a pension) that has been updated. YOU can do far better without a package coming to NYC but best bet is to stay in a tourist class budget hotel that has recognizable name and reputation - New Yorkk Inn is not in that category. name places that are in that category and generally rated as not good in this forum include Hotel Pennsylvania and the Milford. Budget places that fare better include Grand Union, the Stanford, Portlan Square and the Herald Square. If you can deal with a shared bath in order to save $$ consider Habitat Hotel or Pickwick Arms. Priceline remains the best way to get a good hotel room in NYC for under $100 but I'll leave it to you to search this forum and elswhere for info - it's been discussed to death already.

How about The Empire Hotel on 44th W 63St.... Thanks for any help...

I've stayed at the Empire Hotel many times, most recently in March 2002. The location is terrific. The public spaces are kept up well, although the restaurant was a casualty of 9/11 and I don't believe they've put a new one in yet. The rooms are quite small, and the traditional decor is beginning to show signs of use. Rooms have TV, CD player and VCR. Inside rooms have no view but are quiet (unless you are next to an elevator). Some outside rooms have a view of Lincoln Center, across the street. Nice (though expensive) breakfast buffet on the mezzanine in the area that used to house the restaurant and which still houses the bar. I would not hesitate to stay here if the price was reasonable. Also, there is a convenient grocery store, deli with buffet bar in the building, though entrance is from the street. Central Park is about a block away.

Hi, Misty!<BR>It was good to read Owen's reply to you, and I am glad you are taking his advice... a little over a year ago I had the idea of staying someplace up around 102nd St and I asked on this forum about it -- Owen was nice enough to actually go past and have a look, before writing back and advising me to choose somewhere else. And now I am so glad I did.... we finally booked in at the Madison on 27th and Madison Ave, and we couldn't have been happier. A room for four cost us $88 with breakfast... single rooms are around $61. It seems to me that just about everywhere in New York is "walkable" to everywhere else, as the city is so exciting at every step, that you will cover miles and miles and never feel it... but certainly the Madison, a few blocks from the Empire State and Macy's, and close to a subway (I forget which one) would have to be considered well-placed. For the money, I doubt if you'll do better.

We stayed at Days Inn Hotel on Eighty Avenue between 47th and 48th. I would recommend it. Great location. Safe in room, iron and ironing board, ice machine, friendly staff.<BR><BR>I also have stayed at Edison Hotel on 47th between 7th and 8th avenue. It is nice as well but more expensive than Days and less amenities (no safe, no iron, had to pay for ice) Also Days room was bigger.<BR><BR>Dont get me wrong, neither are fancy, but both are clean and safe and good locale.

According to Carlos, a fellow employyee, "it sucks". Due for major refurnisment many years ago. Cable torn out of TV, Door on one hinghe, etc....not.<BR>Only if you're looking for material to put on a worst hotels list..

Have you checked out the Hayden Hotel? I plan to stay there in December. <BR><BR>I've heard it's not bad..small but for the $$$ that's fine with me.

There is a Marriott Courtyard around Madison Ave and 40th (not sure of the exact location but in that area) and they sometimes have rooms for $89/night (check the Marriott website). We stayed at the Clarion 5th Ave (they called it Midtown South on Priceline) for $121/night last weekend. It was outstanding, however you have to remember there are heavy taxes/and room charges in NYC so figure adding $15-20 to whatever rate you are quoted per night. The subway is so easy to use - don't be afraid of it. And, of course, walking is terrific.

By all means, consider using Priceline. I've stayed in many four-star hotels in Midtown West (which includes Times Square) for under $100 per night.
