Advice on Trip of New York City

My husband is a Yankee fan. He has been on a guys baseball trip to Cooperstown, Boston, Baltimore and NY for games. We are talking about a family trip. We have a son age 12 and daughter age 10. Husband would like to go back to Cooperstown and go to a Yankee game or two. I'm interested in seeing a broadway play. Any advice on places to stay and options for transporation around NY and to Cooperstown.

Stay in Midtown. You can use the subway to get anywhere.

You can take the subway almost anywhere, except Cooperstown. For that, you'll need to rent a car. There are plenty of hotels in the area around the HOF. It's at least a 4 or 5 hour drive from NYC.

thanks for the advice. What would a hotel in midtown cost? Also cost for subway?

Pam, take a look at any good guidebook on NYC and you'll see that hotel rates(by far most hotels in NY are in "midtown") can range from under $100 (budget hotels, maybe shared baths) to $400-$500 and more. Many people use Priceline to get hotels at a lower rate,but you won't know what hotel you will get, just the general location and quality level;
Subway is $1.50 per ride regardless of distance, but there are all sorts of options for unlimited rides (daily weekly, etc)
If you're interested in coming to NYC, come back here with very detailed questions when you're further along in your research and you'll get great insights from people, but I would suggest looking at a few guidebooks first to get an overview and some ideas of what you might like to do/see here

Have done several trips to NYC for Yankees games with my family of all guys, and the same for Cooperstown, but never together. I agree with other posters-stay in midtown, take the subway to Yankee Stadium, and just about anywhere else. An unlimited day pass for the subway is about $6/person. There are also multi-day passes. You can buy them at the magazine shop in Grand Central Station and in the individual stations. Go to quikbook.com to search for hotels in NYC-i've gotten good rates and convenient places there. I don't care for the Marriott thats right next to Grand Central, but everytime we've been there for a game, the visiting team has stayed there.
Cooperstown is terrific. Very cute little town, not much to choose from in hotels. There's a grand old resort hotel there (either the Otesaga or the Sagamore-I cant remember which) and local inns, B & Bs, motels. You would have to drive to Cooperstown from NYC. Sounds like a great trip.
