Advice for road trip to Pittsburgh??
 

Hello fellow travelers! I am a 30 yr old male from NJ and a a few of my buddies and I are huge NY Mets fans and thought it might be fun to hop in the car in a few weeks and drive to Pittsburgh and watch them play there! We've never been to Pitt before and am looking forward to spending the weekend there. I really have no clue where to begin so I thought I would start as I usually do and collect some tips! What do you recommend for a group of guys to have fun for a weekend in Pitt? I am talking about sports bars, restaurants, specific neighborhoods we should focus on getting a hotel in, gentlemen's clubs, etc etc basically anything you can think of! One of the most critical things is to pick a hotel (not too pricey) but in a good area, preferably not too far from places to hang out. And obviously we will be going to at least one of the ballgames too. Thanks so much in advance!!!

We used priceline last summer and got the Westin for about $75 a night. It is walking distance to the ballfield and the Phillies were staying there at the same time. Saw a few of the players including Ryan Howard.

As far as the rest of your questions, I leave that to others - I was with a group of 45 year old ladies and we went to art museums and conservatories. Pretty sure that is not what you guys are looking for.

Well, lets see. Pittsburgh is all about the neighborhoods.

Carson Street, on the South Side, is famous for its row of bars and restaurants. You can look up South Side Pittsburgh for more about it.

You can get to South Side by taking the incline railway up from Station Square, a former grand central station turned into an upscale mall. There is a boat to Pirate games that leaves from Station Square.

The baseball stadium is on the North Side, which also has some bars (but its been too long for me to remember what their names are).

You could stay downtown (near the Point) and have access to all this -- mostly in walking distance if you don't mind a longish walk.

The Strip District would be a cool place to hang out in the morning or lunch. Try Wholey's for an awesome fish sandwich, or Primanti's for ths sandwich that made Pgh famous (the one with fries and coleslaw inside).

Oakland is the university neighborhood where you will find more bars with students; Craig Street has great ethnic restaurants, and you can get world class burger/dogs/ fries/onion rings at the O (Oakland Original).

Shadyside (esp Walnut Street) for upscale bars and restuarants where the high-class people go.

There's also a Hard Rock at Station Square. And you're near the Duquesne Incline. Take it to the top and get an outstanding view of the three-rivers confluence! Check my album at http://community.webshots.com/user/b...host=community .

The stadium is GREAT! Any baseball fan would enjoy seeing a game or two there.
You might want to try a Primanti Brothers sandwich at the game. Go hungry, lots of food choices at the ballpark.
Since it's only a weekend, and you are young fellas who will certainly be out enjoying the night, you won't get to see all the other things Pittsburgh area offers, but do come back again soon.
And to fit right in, when abbreviating Pittsburgh, it's PGH, not Pitt.
Pitt is the University of Pittsburgh.

Like one of the posters above we used Priceline and found it is great for Pittsburgh. We bid on only four stars downtown and got, I think, it was also the Westin, for $60.00. Just can't beat the prices on Priceline.

If it rains and you want to go someplace before the bar scene, The Andy Warhol Museum is interesting. http://www.warhol.org/

The two best places to stay are probably the Sheraton right in Station Square (you'll be near everything on the South Side) and the Westin for the reasons mentioned by others on the board. The nightlife areas are the Strip and the South Side. Google Strip District or South Side to get a sense of what's there that you would like and dislike.

Try the Ramada Plaza Suites at One Bigelow for rooms. The T "subway" is right across the street and will take you within a couple of blocks of everything you would want to do. Get a map online for routes. The Plaza is nothing fancy, but clean and convenient and most rooms have small kitchen. Have fun, Pburgh is great city.
