Advice for long layover in SFO
 

Yikes, coming back from China this July from my tour, I'll have a 11 hr layover. Question, what to do to fill the time. Anyone recommend a bus tour to see the sights, place to eat, and easy way to get downtown

You could go to Chinatown...

Be sure and see the museum they always have in the terminal. If you don't take the moving walkway, it's right in the middle, where you would walk without a walkway!<BR>The diplay changes all the time. It was automobile and travel advertising last time I was there. Not enough for 11 hours, but check it out.

Claye,<BR><BR>Let's see...11 hour layover minus 1 hour into town, 1 hour back and 2 hours early that you must be back for your flight: you have 7 hours to explore--which is still a fair amount of time.<BR><BR>Don't know if you've been to SF before or not but, if it was me, I would probably hop in a cab and take it to the Wharf (with only 7 hours do you really want to spend time waiting for buses, shuttles and cable cars?). Once on the Wharf you could gobble up some fresh seafood from the kiosks, take a bay cruise, explore Ghiradelli Square, have3 an Irish Coffee at Buena Vista and still have some time for wandering.<BR><BR>Whatever you do, don't just sit at the airport: too much to see and do elsewhere! I agree with David, take a cab into the city. Do you want to sit on a tour bus after that long flight? Another suggestion would be a walking tour, if you are up to it. The San Francisco Library offers a few interesting and free walking tours. With seven hours you can see or do whatever you like. Have you been to SF before? What time of day are you getting in? Museum, ball game, pub crawl, shopping, what's your fancy?

David-It's the first time for me on that coast, yes a sheltered life. The first thing that went through my mind was visiting the Wharf and finding some eats. I'll look up the other places you've mentioned, a bay cruise sounds real good. Cab idea does sound better with limited time.<BR><BR>Susan-A good walk would be nice. I'm arriving at noon and taking the 2230 redeye out. Basically my fancy would be seeing the Golden Gate, the hills and Cable Cars, just a quick highlight touristy look.<BR><BR>

Claye,<BR><BR>Consider taking the ferry from the Embarcadero to Sausalito and wandering around there before returning. Everyone goes to Fisherman's Wharf and it's such a tourist area; not at all reflective of the beauty of SF. Seeing SF from the Bay is pretty incredible too.

Rent a car and drive out to Half Moon Bay for a bite to eat, then up the coast for a spell, circle back around to see San Francisco then back to the airport.

Half Moon Bay is such a sleepy little place with basically nothing to do. Skip that idea and take the taxi right into San Francisco. Don't rent a car! Take a taxi down to one of the cable car stations and take a ride around.
