Advice for Autumn in the Hamptons
 

Hi Everyone,

I'm planning a trip for next fall (mid-October) to the Hamptons. We'll be staying at Baker House 1650 in East Hampton. This will be our first trip there. I'd like some advice for how many days we should spend in the area. Will there be enough to do if I book 4 nights/5 days? We enjoy shopping, visiting wineries, restaurants, museums and sightseeing.

Assuming you're willing to do some driving to other villages and perhaps the North Fork, you should be fine with 5 days. I'd make sure to include a weekend or at least one weekend day when there,s more going on.

The Hamptons Film Festival is usually in mid October. Your visit might coincide with that.

You could probably fill up 5 days, depending on how much exploring you want to do and how relaxed you want your visit to be, but the big attraction in the Hamptons, other than the restaurants, is the beach. If you have the kind of weather we've been having this year you could even go for a swim.

There are not that many museums that I'm aware of - there's the Jackson Pollack House in East Hampton and the lighthouse at Montauk, but there are plenty of art galleries in the various towns. I think Bridgehampton has a historical society but I don't know much about it. And there are plenty of shops.

Sag Harbor is a cute little fishing village in the area that would be nice for a visit.

Mid October should be nice for apple picking and pumpkin picking and there are several wineries in the area. Lots of beautiful homes and estates, if you like driving around and seeing that sort of thing.

You will definitely want to visit the North fork for a couple of days. You should look into whale watching from Montauk. And do realize museums/libraries are limited - but there is a lot of quaint in several towns.

Whale watching--my husband would love that.

Panecott makes a good point about the film festival which could make accommodation tougher/ more expensive.

Is the film festival the same time every year? I couldn't find a website giving me next year's dates. Maybe the hotel people will know when I make a reservation. I'd like to avoid that timeframe.
