Adventures in San Diego

Help! I need to know of exciting places in San Diego. I need real tourist areas and not so tourist areas. Thanks.

Depending on when you're going to San Diego, look into any whale watching cruises. We were in San Diego last February and went out to see the Gray Whales migrating. It was really fun. Coronado Island is also a really neat place to go and see the huge Inn where "Some Like It Hot" was filmed.

Jessica: Balboa Park is a nice place to spend the day: nice grounds, the zoo, interesting museums and outdoor organ concerts on Sundays. Cabrillo Memorial has uninterrupted views of the city and the ocean. We stayed at the Del Coronado, which had wonderful rooms (get one in the old part of the hotel) and excellent service. The Brigantine across the street has great seafood.

Jessica it's been a couple of years since my last trip out west but a few nice sights --------Old Town San Diego(shops & Mexican food),San Diego Wild Animal Park(part of the zoo but about 30 miles? from town),the zoo itself is world renouned and just a harbor cruise is very nice.

For San Diego -
Balboa park - Fantastic park and the world-famous San Diego Zoo is within the park

Sea World - no explanation needed!

Coronado Island - this has the Hotel Del Coronado on it, and what a bridge ride on the way there! Also had a wonderful view of the city skyline at night across the harbor

Cabrillo National Monument - excellent views of both the city/harbor and the ocean, dont forget to check out the tide pools at the bottom on the ocean side

Mission Bay park - water sports, bbqs, and near Sea World

Old town - a taste of the Mexican influence on old San Diego. Adobe buildings, gift shops, etc

Tijuana - a different country, just across the border...see who's playing at the Iguana that night

La Jolla (thats pronounced La hoya!)- cove and beaches

Embacadero - a waterfront section of town, includes the Star of India ( a three-master schooner), sea-port village, and the maritime museum

GasLamp quarter - best visited at night, this neighborhood by downtown has lots of bistros, galleries, nightclubs and restaurants. Be careful not to stray from the quarter as you will find yourself in downtown at night

some places to avoid - the Market St neighborhood, Little Italy at night, downtown at night
