Advance reservations
 

Hi everyone,
We will be visiting New York in October - staying in midtown. We are planning as best as possible to make our stay memorable. We are wondering if there is anything that we should purchase in advance (online or with the concierge) i.e. subway passes, Broadway musical tickets etc....
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That is the busiest time of year for NYC (Labor Day through January 2).

If you wait until you get there for show tickets, chances are good they will be sold out. Also, make dinner reservations as soon as you can. Some will only take 30 days out.

If you go to Broadwaybox.com or one of the other theater sites you can often find special offers that will let you buy discount tickets to shows that have been running for a while (not the newest or the biggest hits). Perhaps a better choice than standing on line at TKTS to see what they have discounts on for that night.

Sorry but I have to disagree with nytraveler. Since the city is going to be extremely busy, the TKTS booth will be my last choice - long lines and you don't know if you'll get the tickets for the show you want. www.broadwaybox.com etc... offers many discounts on many shows and in this case I think it is much better to book in advanced.

John, if you reread, I don't think nytraveler implied TKTS would be a first choice.

John - I'm afraid you completely misread what I wrote. I reco Broadway Box etc - waiting til the last minute and using TKTS is a BAD idea.

If you want to see a specific shows that's already sold out - like Spamalot - your other choice is to look at e-bay or try one of the on-line scalpers. But - you need to expect to pay a premium.

Things to consider buying online in advance in addition to theater tickets (or concerts or dance recitals) are
&gt;tickets to the <b>Empire State building</b> (you'll still have to wait on line for the elevators but having advance tickets will help a lot)

&gt;reservation/tickets for <b>Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island</b> (if you plan to visit either--you can do the Staten Island ferry for free and just pass by)
