Adirondacks or Catskills
Wife and myself are looking for a quiet area of either one. Perhaps a cabin or lodge. Looking to hike and sightsee with a little shopping in quaint little towns

I spent a few days at Friends Lake Inn in Chestertown, NY in the Adirondacks a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. There are hiking and cross country skiing trails on the property along with a lake plus it is close to Lake George. There are plenty of activities close by plus the inn itself was charming and had some incredible rooms with private porches overlooking the lake with large stone fireplaces which were very cozy. They have a great website with details for the accomodations. My favorites are the "Adirondack" rooms.

Mirror lake Inn In Lake placid is very nice

adirondacks hands down. Try Schroon lake area. I used to go to camp there in the 60's.

If you're still here, another vote for Adirondacks. Friends Lake Inn is good. Also try Irondequoit Inn - less well known, great area, can be uneven for service/food but I still recommend it.
