Adirondacks or Block Island Help, please

My brother and his girlfriend are looking for a romantic place to spend a few days in August. They wanted to go to either Block Island or the Adirondacks. Their budget is $150 a night. They know they will have problems finding last minute availability, but is it possible to find a decent place in their price range in August?
Thanks.

It's going to be hard to keep it at $150 on Block I. He'll probably have better luck at a small B&B or motel in the Adirondacks. Try this site: http://adk.com/lodging/z-lodging.htm

Thanks, Michelle. I have passed it on to him. He loves being spontaneous...not a good plan for destinations like these.

Hmmm...if he is not constrained to a weekend he might be able to negotiate a price in that range on BI.

I'm afraid that "negotiating" will be out in the month of august. Both midweek and weekend rate will be at their highest.

If he likes inns he might try the Irondequoit Inn on Lake Piseco. There is good kayaking right from that Inn. The management changes frequently there, so it's hard to say at any given time how well run it is, but the place itself is nice. If they don't care about being on the water, try the Copperfield Inn in North Creek or Melody Lodge in Speculator. I've never stayed at Melody but we have dinner there all the time and it's first rate.

I haven't stayed here, but every time we pass it (in the Adirondack's on the way to visit my brother in VT) I comment to my husband that some day we're going to spend a night or two:

This B&B sits up on a hill overlooking Lake George (the northern part of the lake - very far away from the touristy Lake George Village on the southern part of the lake. The view is fantastic, and there are a few little lakefront restaurants and beaches.

If they stay there, please post back and let me know how they liked it!

Thank for the suggestions, I have passed them on to my brother. I have asked him to send me a trip report which I will post here.

That's interesting, Michelle- I have been on many day trips to Block during midweek in the summer (I'd rather have pins stuck in my eyes than go on a weekend) and always notice quite a few "vacancy" signs on the hotels and B&Bs. Where there is vacancy, there is at least the slight possiblilty of negotiation. Might be worth a few phone calls......

Buffalo Girl's suggestion turned out to be the winner. He was thrilled to find a vacancy at the RUAH b and b although only for a couple of days. The other two days they will be at Elk Lake Lodge, which has intrigued me for some time but which gets very mixed ratings on this site. He has a friend who is loaning him a cabin in VT for the last few days. Thanks to everyone who gave us help. PS. I told him to definitely put Block Island on the to do list for a future visit.

Yeah!!!

cmcfong, please let me know how they liked it. I WILL stay there some day. That house stops me in my tracks every time I see it!
