Adirondacks New York...On The Cheap

We're going old school--camping, hiking, swimming, marshmellow roasts--everything but the giant station wagon with faux-wood panels. Last week in July--looking for ideas on which campgrounds to choose, affordable activities, good medium-difficulty to easy trails (we'll have a grandparent with us--she's healthy but not up for peak-bagging). Not interested in quaint shops, spa visits, etc.

Hello,
You might want to look into Lake George, NY, I think it might be a good fit for what you are looking for. It has everything you mentioned camping, plenty of hiking, swimming and much more.I have been to lake George many times and stayed at Colonel Williams motel and I also stayed on the lake as well. If you can I would stay on the lake.I do know someone that stayed at King Philip's campground and resort and had only good things to say about it. (Of course I always read reviews anyway) this place has a pool, a large playground (if you have kids),games, but I do not think this place is on the lake. It is my understanding that the trolley that takes you in the village of LG stops here, so you can leave the car behind. Know need to fight for parking just to go get a bite to eat or walk around and have an ice cream.
You mentioned hiking, I know prospect mountain and the more popular hiking destination of Mt. Marcy which is 5,000 feet is within easy reach. I have never hiked these mountains so I can not speak to that. There is water activities, and you can even choose to take a boat trip around Lake George, which I found very relaxing. Enjoy!

It is a very nice place to visit.

I spent 5 days in Lake George area last summer. It was a wonderful trip, and location. I had never been before but the area motels were reasonable. I cannot comment on camp ground as we did not stay there. Our place was right on the lake and it was a gorgeous area.

Lake George is cool, lots of hiking nearby. Rogers Rock State Campground on the Northern-end might be a good possibility.

All the NYS operated campgrounds are a great value - they also have some prime locations. Make sure you reserve ahead of time for July to get the best site.

We really enjoyed Rollins Pond, east of Tupper Lake. Make reservations ASAP.
