Adirondacks Lodging - Sagamore, the Hedges?
 

Hi -

Any advice on a nice place to stay in the Adirondacks over Labor Day weekend. We were thinking of the Sagamore or the Hedges, but really know nothing about either place. Is Lake George really crowded this time of year? How is Blue Mountain Lake? Or any other places we should consider? Thanks.

We are considering a similar trip next year. One place I have been looking at is Elk Lake Lodge. Looks wonderful but I haven't gotten any feedback on this board. Do post a trip report when you get back.
By the way, the Hedges got an excellent review on this board a couple of weeks ago.

Adirondacks will be very busy at Labor Day. A couple of lesser know places I know of that you could try - Inn at Lake Pleasant and Irondequoit Inn. It will be hunting season (deer) so be careful in the woods.

If you don't care about being right on a lake (like if you want to hike or kayak and can move boats to put ins) try the Copperfield Inn in North Creek.

I used to live in the North Country in the 80's and Blue Mountain Lake was my favorite spot. Don't know much about the accommodations, but the museum is very interesting and the lake is beautiful. Have stayed at Mirror Lake in Lake Placid and it is lovely. Placid will be crowded but if you've never been there, it's worth the drive. Can't believe they hosted an Olympics there--it's really just a small town. If you go, try to have lunch, a drink or dinner at The Cottage (right on the lake...definitely the local hangout).

By the way - favorite restaurants of mine in central Adirondacks are Melody Lodge (kind of elegant - but of course you are in the Adk so you can wear anything)in Speculator, Swifty's (which is mostly a bar, also in Speculator), The Owl at Twilight (Olmstedville).

There are lots of great places to stay in the Adirondacks. Depends on what you're looking for. Sagamore is a bit stuffy for my taste. Elk Lake Lodge is a gorgeous location. I've never stayed there but would love to. Lake George is crazed and crowded esp. on Labor Day. I don't even consider it part of the Adirondacks. Check out www.saranaclake.com. Go to accomodations, then click on Adirondack lodges. Some amazing places listed here - White Pine Camp, North Lake Lodge. Friends Lake Inn is another great place. Good luck with reservations for Labor Day. I'm sure you'll find something wonderful.

This is Schroon Lake. A lovely Adirondack village. We stop here often on the trip up from NYC to Montreal. You will be a little out of the honky tonk atmosphere of Lake George.
We stay at the Sagamore but in the fall. It can be stuffy, very few people under retirement age, and it is on the expensive side. But the Yankee and I like to rent a lodge, which is a great one bedroom unit with a fireplace, kitchen and terrace facing the lake. You can get room service, and snuggle in front of the fire. I always sleep like the dead , it is so comfortable and dark and quiet there :)
Blue Mountain Lake is gorgeous! I have been there during the day and would love to stay there for a week or so. Good luck, I think you might be running out of time ~
