Activities in the Keys

Will be going to the Keys with 3 teens over spring break. We'll be staying in Key Largo, Grassy Key and Key West (3 nts in GK, 1 nt each in Key Largo & Key West). We don't like to spend the whole day on the beach and are interested in good snorkeling trips, kayaking & bike rentals, etc. My husband and I did the snorkel trip from Pennekamp a while back and had a great time. How is the snorkeling in the lower Keys? I've found lots of outfits but don't know who's the best. Also, the kids have no experience snorkeling.

I can highly recommend Floridays for snorkeling in Key West. Unlike the catamarans, who pack in folks like sardines, Floridays limits snorkelers to around 20. They're great for first-timers, too.

Forgot to mention that Floridays docks at the Hyatt Resort.

Hi Nancy-Some things to do with kids in Key West:

The Mel Fisher Museum has treasures from ancient shipwrecks, as well as a 30 minute documentary movie on how Mel Fisher made his fortune diving for treasures.

Key West Lighthouse
Haunted House Tour or Cemetery Stroll.
Mallory Square Sunset Celebration.
Key West Aquarium.
Ripley's Believe it Or Not Museum
Day trip to Ft. Jefferson.
There are numerous bike rental places in Key West.

On Grassy Key-Check out the Dolphin Research Center.

For snorkeling, go with a smaller charter company instead of the "cattle boats."

Nancy:

We just got back from our yearly trip to the keys and this year these are the activities we enjoyed the most:

Swimming with the dolphins at DRC on Grassy Key (but you have to make reservations 1 month in advance and they fill up fast!) otherwise, you can take a tour of the facility for @ $12/pp

In Key West we went Parasailing, which was a blast! There were only 6 people on our boat and we had a great time! Also, we took the day trip to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. That was well worth the money. The snorkling was great, so was the tour of the fort and the swimming!

Have a great time!

Floridays does a great snorkel trip. I would recommend them over the bigger outfits.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I found a web site for dive trips to Looe Key coral reef that features lots of small outfits (6 people/boat).
