Activities in Page
I only have a day in Page and I am driving up from Grand Canyon seeing the viewpoints, stopping at the Cameron Trading Post, then in Page seeing Antelope Canyon, Glen Canyon Dam, and hiking to Horseshoe Bend. For Antelope Canyon, do you reccomend going with a Navajo guide at the gate or a professional guide? I like the sound of going with the Navajo guide because it is cheaper and you don't have to make reservation, so I can do it when I want. I thought about doing a float trip, but just don't have the time and the next day I am driving to Zion and want to leave early in the morning. What I might have time for is a cruise on Lake Powell. Which cruises are short and do you reccomend?

I could not get enough of Lake Powell. We rented a houseboat, and then rented jet skis for a half day.
On a jet ski, you can go way up all the little shallow crevices left by the drought. I understand there are petroglyphs back up in there that have only recently been uncovered with the receding waterline. And on a jet ski, you can go where ever you want and stop where ever you want. |
We used a private guide in Page for the Upper Antelope Slot Canyon because my BIL & SIL wanted the air conditioned vehicle to drive over the sandy road to get to the canyon. It also turned out to be a bonus because the suburban is limited to 7 seats & the driver guide so the tour group is very small! We didn't need reservations either and this was in August. I think any tour you take will be good.

The advantage of the navajo guides is it is cheaper. But the only thing I have read they do is just drive you to the slot canyon in the back of a flatbed truck. The Professional Guides give you a tour. If I want to sign up with a professional guide when I get there, where do I go to do that? Also, is the Horseshoe Bend Trailhead well marked? Where can you rent Jet-Skis?

Antelope Canyon tours - keep in mind these are 2001 rates!
http://www.pagelakepowellchamber.org...pe_canyon.html We used Grand Circle Adventures and went directly to their web site. Our guide did point out many of the points of interest in the canyon: http://www.antelopeslotcanyontours.com/index.html Horseshoe Bend Hike is a well worn path after you see the sign at the parking lot. http://www.travelsw.com/southwest-tr.../horseshoe.htm Utahtea |
Did you tour the Glen Canyon Dam? Are any of the Lake Powell Cruises good? I might do the Antelope Canyon Cruise where they cruise into the lower reaches of the canyon.
|
I am not sure there are Navajo guides at AC. I know that the professional guides out of Page have to pay the Navajo Nation a fee at the gate to AC before going through. We went with Grand Circle Adventures (ask for Jesse).
The parking lot for the trail at Horseshoe Bend is well marked at roadside. The Glen Canyon Dam tour was very interesting. There is also a trailhead for the Dam Overlook trail which I think is on the same road as HB. There are some nice cruises on LP including an all-day cruise which goes through slot canyons to Rainbow Bridge NM. LP is really nice & it sounds like you would like to do alot there if you could allocate the time. We spent 2.5 days there & then went on to Zion. |
How long was the Glen Canyon Dam tour? The Navajo Guides are at the gate, so you drive to the gate and go from there. Did you make a reservation for the Antelope Canyon Tour?
|
We did the Glen Canyon Dam tour many years ago and enjoyed it.
My favorite tour on Lake Powell is the day trip to Rainbow Bridge. The last time we did it you could see Rainbow Bridge from the tour boat, now because of years of drought you have to hike 1 1/2 miles to see it. I love being on the lake and the guided tour is the way to go if you have all day. The 1/2 day float trips on the Colorado River is also fantastic! Utahtea |
I think the Dam tour was 1 hour.
We reserved a spot for the AC beacause we wanted to go at a specific time for the lighting. The times are staggered between all the tour companies so that you are not all there at the same time (it is also pretty narrow in there). I made a mistake in my other post -- we were actually in Page for an afternoon, a full day, & a morning -- & we did all the attractions I mentioned before plus the Johm Wesley Powell Museum. |
Utahtea- See my post on Grand Canyon activities. I am thinking about doing that Float Trip.
|
Actually, the float trip is not avalible that day or the next day. I guess these things book up. What is a good cruise on the lake? I think the Rainbow Bridge Cruise is too long.
