Actiivities around Great Falls, Montana

We will be visiting a ranch outside Great Falls, MT, in early August. Can anyone recommend activities for that area?

Look at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, the Charlie Russell Museum, and the Ulm Pishkun Buffalo Jump State Park. There is also great hiking near Augusta and Choteau and good hiking on the east side of Great Falls near Neihart. There is great fishing on the Dearborn River.

We loved the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center! It was very well done and came highly recommended by kureiff -

Also recommended the Charlie Russell museum -

Our time was limited and I made time for his log cabin studio and home first. (Although it was a bit weird seeing the actual studio after the recreation of the studio at the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody.

I may be strange but I love seeing buffalo jumps. My favorite before this one was in Canada, but the one outside Great Falls is VERY well done.

Be sure to make time to drive to the top of the mesa. You can hike it too if you like (from visitor center to mesa top)

Great Falls also has a baseball team. It is a "rookie" team associated with the Chicago Cubs. Tickets are cheap--$5 or you can splurge on $8 seats behind home plate with free pop and popcorn and a waitress who will get it for you! While it doesn't compare to the activities listed above by others, it can be an intertaining way to spend an evening if you like baseball. The field is near the Lewis and Clark museum.

You could actually go and see the "Great Falls" of the MO River or what is left of them. Lewis and Clark had to portage around them.

In addition to those mentioned (we certainly enjoyed all of them), we also did the Gates of the Mountains Riverboat Tour which we also enjoyed very much.
