Ackislander

Are you on island? It's a mighty messy storm. I guess payback for dodging the blizzard of '78. Stay safe and out of the flooding. Your island got slammed. Be safe or hopefully you have a caretaker to check things out.

it's maddness on ack island, madness I tell you!!!

emalloy Jan 27th, 2015 06:33 PM

Ack may not have electricity yet.

Most nantuckians don't have power but have lots of water

Ackislander Jan 28th, 2015 12:12 AM

Not on island. In Richmond where the snow melted by 2 PM.

It is a mess at home. No one without a generator ( that includes us) has had power since yesterday morning. Hurricane force winds blew down a lot of wires, but the real problem is a frozen substation near the waterfront where there was considerable flooding.

No heat, no water if you have a well, no cable, no internet.

Hospital and a warming station at the high school are open on generators.

Verizon cell phones were working. ATT cell service completely out, but ATT doesn't work very well anyway. People charging cell phones in their cars and trucks.

A friend called last night on a rotary dial landline phone which she had never gotten around to taking out. Lucky her. She will check our house today but as of last night, she couldn't get from Surfside to town.

The local newspaper (www.ack.net) is doing a great job. The authorities, not so much.

It will be interesting to see how the bluff on Baxter Road in Sconset fared. Houses were already threatened by erosion, and storm surges in Truro on the Cape broke through the dunes.

Am I worried about my pipes? Yes. But whaddaya gonna do? My wife and I are warm and wish all our friends were here with us. We have owned our house since 1990 and have never lost power for more than three hours. Sometimes the law of averages catches up with you.

Glad to hear you're well. Hope your house is too.

Inakauaidavidababy Jan 28th, 2015 07:33 PM

Yes, sometimes the law of averages catch up with you. We learned that when we were complacent during the April Fools Day storm years ago. We burned the rest of our wood and then the power went out for 4 days. It was a rude awakening after cooking a great meal and wine and movie by the fire as the storm raged outside morning.

Glad you are warm and safe. Hope your pipes are as well.

Knock on wood!

Happy to say we got power back late yesterday morning, and the heat came back on. No sounds of rushing water, according to our caretaker/friend.

Another friend sent us a picture of the house from her Verizon phone. We have had much larger snowfalls but none with quite that combination of wet snow, high wind, and flooding. A key substation downtown flooded, and that's all it took. Transformers popped and burned all over the island.

Thank you for your concern.

Glad you are warm and safe and your house intact. And weren't we among those posting on a thread a month or so back about a late January trip to Boston? Can't find it, but I am laughing thinking of it.

I'm hoping that everything is ok at your island home, Akislander. My parents, on the cape, said the winds were fierce. Welcome back to Virginia. Is it time for a Richmond gtg?

Ackislander Jan 29th, 2015 03:45 PM

Gail, I DID go to Boston and ACK mid January but headed south again just in time to get caught in the ice storm in CT, NY, and NJ!

It isn't warm here, but it is warmer than there. I will be back in Boston inI March, no doubt just in time for one of those big, wet 16" March snows.

6 FEET plus in two weeks has not been fun!

Ackislander Feb 10th, 2015 02:00 PM

My relatives in Arlington and Milton and friends in Brookline send pictures.

It took the governor a while to declare an emergency and call out the National Guard.

More Thursday and again this weekend?

Inakauaidavidababy Feb 10th, 2015 02:16 PM

Yes, with the mbta shutdown and more on the way - it isn't pretty. Well over time to pull out the snow rake to hit the roofs. fingers crossed, knock on wood
