Acitivites and food near Charlottesville, VA

We've relocated to Charlottesville, VA. In the midst of finding a house in this crazy real estate market, we haven't had much time to explore!

What fabulous restaurants do we need to try in the area? I've read the Blue Bird Cafe and Zocalo on other postings, but is there anything else? We like just about everything, but tend to dine out on a budget (unfortunately!).

We've been to Monticello and are planning to check out Ashlawn - waht other sites should be venture out to?

Finally, we enjoy camping and I know there have to be some fabulous campgrounds that would make good weekend trips. Any recommendations?

Thanks so much!

Restaurants - not at all fancy, but we like Crozet Pizza in Crozet and Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford. The atmosphere in both is rather interesting but the food is great!

Camping - Shenandoah National Park

Sites - you are only 2 hours away from Williamsburg!

Hi TravelingMom,

My brother lives in CHarlottesville and I'm actually headed out that way this weeking. Shabeen (spelling?) is really good food (I think it's African food). Zocalo is absolutely delicious. Blue Bird Cafe is great for brunch. Aberdeen Farm is a very yummy steakhouse.

The downtown mall is a lot of fun on Friday nights with bands playing. Jefferson Mill Winery is great for wine tasting and tours - right up the block from Monticello.

Let me think of more ideas and restaurants and I'll post again later.

Peaks of Otter sounds interesting - I guess I'll need to find out what it is!

Funny you should mention Shabeen - we just had lunch there yesterday. I found a coupon at restaurant.com...paid $4 for a $25 certificate!

I guess I should have mentioned that we're originally from VA. My husband and I met at William and Mary, so I'm familiar with that area!

Keep the ideas coming!

Hi!
You could do a day trip to Lexington, VA. It is a nice small town, you can visit Lee Chapel on Washington & Lee campus, Stonewall Jackson House, VMI Military Museum. I'm a little biased, as I went to college at W & L, but I think it makes a nice day trip!

Barboursville vineyard has a great restaurant and if you enjoy wine, you will love it! Check out the website for virginia wines, virginiawines.org, to get times and days when they have special events!

Also, take a trip up to Jefferson's Vineyard, and on the way there or back, stop for lunch at Michie Tavern - historic tavern that serves food as they did when Jefferson was around! It's great!

Been to DC yet? Take a trip to the nation's capital, it's beautiful.

The Bavarian Chef in Orange, VA is one of the best German restaurants I've EVER found. The portions are enormous, so do not order too much. (You will notice everyone coming out is carring boxes of leftovers with them...testament to the amount of food served.) It really is very very good, however and you will be tempted to over-order.

When you head up to Orange to eat at the Bavarian Chef, don't forget to visit James Madison's nearby home - Montpelier.

Ha someone already mentioned The Bavarian Chef in Orange. Pack a cooler in your car so you can bring back leftovers, if you aren't planning on heading home right after! This is the best German restaurant we've ever been to in the US.

If you like wine, there Are many vineyards to visit. As mentioned previously, Barboursville is wonderful, and some of our other favorites are Jefferson's, and Sharp Rocks, which is very near Old Rag -- a great place to hike.
