Accomodations on Nob Hill
 

I just booked a room at the Hotel Juliana in San Francisco. Has anyone stayed there? Is there another hotel in that neighborhood that someone can recommend? I will be traveling with my husband and son so most B&Bs are out since they only accomodate 2 people to a room.

Juliana is nice, it is a &quot;boutique&quot; hotel, which reminds me of the European hotels. If your breakfast is offered free as ours was (we were there in off season), take advantage of it, otherwise go out to eat, eating there was a bit pricey for what you got. Wine reception at night was a nice touch. We were happy with the convenient and safe location, just one block from Union Square, in the direction of Nob Hill. I recently stayed at the Nob Hill Hotel and it was nice once they tranferred us to a larger room (which you can request when making a booking). I don't know how it compares to the Hotel Juliana, but it did have a &quot;European feel&quot;--infact, we meet several people from Europe there during the free nightly happy hour and a continental breakfast was included with the room.

The Juliana is a nice hotel in a not so nice area. Being one block from Union Square is not a plus, especially at night.

Dee Dee,<BR><BR>Thanks for the insight. I was concerned that it might be a little close to Union Square. I'll check out the Nob Hill Hotel and the other places that people (finally) recommended on my other post.

If you're thinking of the Mark Hopkins, Intercontinental ALWAYS seems to offer specials, but you must ask about them. The MH is pretty nice, although the rooms need some renovating (unless they've done that recently); the Fairmont across the street is very nice in one of their newer (tower?) rooms.

To Julie, who stayed at the Nob Hill Hotel, or anyone else who has: did you feel that the neighborhood was safe? Was it on a steep hill? How far from the cable car or other transportation? It looks like we can get a double room there in April for $80 including bkfst, which seems a little too good to be true, so I'd appreciate any feedback. We've almost always stayed in the Union Square area and would like to try a different neighborhood. Thanks!

I'm bringing this to the top to see if I can get any more feedback on the Nob Hill Hotel from anyone who has stayed there-nice neighborhood? Very steep hill to get to or from the hotel? Cleanliness? Thanks for your anticipated help.

Claudia, the area is safe, but the hotel is on a steep hill, if you or yours have a problem with it this hotel is out. I don't remember if the cable car runs by it, even if it is, it will be packed, and you will have to walk up/down to and from the hotel to a bus stop.

Claudia,<BR>I suggest you request a larger room at The Nob Hill Hotel unless you don't mind being cramped. We were in a regular double the first night, and changed to a larger room the second.<BR><BR>The neighborhood is relatively safe, parking is difficult. I don't know about public transportation, but it is on a semi-steep hill. Didn't bother me, but I've lived in S.F. and am used to it.<BR><BR>The hotel is clean and the manager is very helpful. Also, it's nice to have the continental breakfast and wine at happy hour. We meet some very nice people during our stay and lots of them like to share information. <BR><BR>Also, I'd recommend an Italian restaurant we went to at the corner of Steiner &amp; Union--think the name was Pane and Vino--excellent and reasonably priced for what you get.<BR><BR>Have a great time.<BR><BR>By the way, Nob Hill Hotel has a website--nobhillhotel.com (I think), but the website makes it look nicer than it was (like I've noticed in several cases on the Internet).

I called the Nob Hill Hotel yesterday for reservations in AUGUST! Believe it or not, they were already booked up. <BR><BR>For the time being, I'm inclined to stay at the Hotel Juliana, because I'm partial to hotels in the Kimpton chain but would like more elaboration about why the neighborhood is bad. Are there strip clubs on this block? Do I need to worry about gangs hanging around once the sun sets? I'm not crazy about Union Square, but I guess I'm trying to determine what are is Nob Hill vs. Union Square.<BR><BR>

Did not read this thread in its entirety so sorry to repeat or give info you don't need. Will tell you that my sister enjoyed herself at Fairmont with a bay view last August. I think she booked or I booked for her in April. We had read that August was a freakishly busy time for SF

I stayed at the Hotel Juliana couple of years ago. It was December and I remember walking with a co-worker (also female) over to the square to look at the Christmas tree. We weren't scared or fearful about walking around. If I remember right, one night we took the cable car back towards the hotel and had to walk a couple of blocks down to the hotel. Again, felt okay. I wouldn't change hotels just because of the area.<BR>The hotel itself was nice. What I remember most about the room was it was done it yellow and red (and I do mean YELLOW and RED). Felt like I could have worn sunglasses in the room. It was the artsy kind of room where everything is done in fabrics that have the same colors but different patterns and mixing stripes and flowers. But I think all the rooms are different sizes and colors. They were doing some restoration of some of the rooms on my floor - so I peeked in them.
