Accomodations near Harvard
My husband will be teaching a seminar at Harvard in early August. Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay close by? (B&B or hotel?)

I remeber that there are several locations in addition to the main campus. will he be at the main campus or one of the outlying schools?

If your husband is teaching near Harvard Sq, The Charles, the Inn at Harvard, and the Sheraton Commodore are quite close but very upscale. Some very nice B&B's are also in the area: Irving House, A Cambridge House B&B, Harding House, in particular. These are a bit less expensive but I prefer them to the chains.

If he's teaching over on the Boston/Allston side of the river at the Business School, there a Doubletree Guest Suites not too far away.

Be aware that some of the hotels listed as being in Cambridge aren't close to Harvard Sq. and require that you have a car, which you don't want to have in the Square. If you can't find space near Harvard Sq., consider staying near a "T" stop -- more convenient, very safe, and useful for you if you go with him.

Two short stops away on the "T" away at the Kendall Stop is a very nice Hyatt, and three stops away at the Charles stop is my personal favorite, the John Jeffries -- a European style B&B/Hotel, right at the foot of Beacon Hill that's much less expensive than the hotels near the Square and more congenial. That's where we stay for the many trips we take to Boston each year.

Second the vote for John Jeffries, although the heating/cooling is sometimes extreme. Boston also has a number of B&B networks (go to citysearch.com, click on Boston, then lodging and then B&Bs, or else do a regulation Yahoo search -- Camrbidge will be part of the result) and this may be a very pleasant alternative. Just make sure of AirCo in August (Bostonians never quite believe it gets hot).

WE stayed in the Hotekl Elliot which was on the Boston side but the bridge to Cambridge was right next to the Hotel. Also right next to Newburry St. Great Hotel!
