Accomodations in the Hill Country?
 

Would like a side trip fpr a couple of days outside of San antonio. Heard New Braunfels was nice? Isn't that wine country for Texas? Can you visit the wineries? Need a good recommendation for somewhere to stay. I like my creature comforts. Thanks <BR>

Try Frederciksburg instead of New Braunfels. It's a smaller town with lots of its German heritage evident. A great B & B booking service is Gastehaus Schmidlt (sp?) but if they are too pricey there are several chain motels in town. There are lots of shops of Main Street and an interesting museum about life of the early settlers. Enchanted Rock State Park is a short drive away. Try the Hilltop Cafe outside of town for dinner - just call first to make reservations. I think you'll find Fredericksburg is more of a "getaway" town than New Braunfels, whick is just a good sized town on the interstate with a good outlet mall. Enjoy Texas <BR>

Another good place to visit outside of San Antonio is Boerne (pronounced "bernie"), which is just west of San Antonio on I-10. There is a great B&B in town called the Borgman's Sunday House- it's quite affordable and very cute! You can do side trips to places like Sisterdale, Fredriksburg and New braunfels very easiy- and the countryside is just gorgeous!

Yes, you can take winery tours. Fredericksburg is a touristy town but you should see it. About 15 minutes east on State Hwy 290 is the Johnson Ranch on the Perdeneles River. Kerrville is another interesting town, which is about 20 minutes west of Fredericksburg. If the flowers are still blooming, take the Willow City Loop out of Fredericksburg--very beautiful & fun even if flowers aren't at their peak (deer, cattle, armadillos, etc.). Gruene (pronounced Green) is near New Braunfels & is like Fredericksburg used to be. It is a great place to relax & enjoy.

We're just back from the Hill Country, and would have loked to do even more exploring than we did. . As for Fredricksburg -- it does have lots of B&B's. It also has LOTS of tourists, lots of kitschy-cutesy gift shoppes and is, in short, a fine example of tacky tourist over-development.

Go to Gruene! It's a wonderful little German town right by New Braunfels. My husband and I go there every year for my birthday ( we're in our 30's) and love it. We always stay at a fabulous bed and breakfast called the Gruene Mansion Inn. Call well in advance to get a room. We prefer the "Das Fluss Haus" rooms, which overlook the river. We like to float down the river in innertubes on pretty days, and there are many cute shops. Everything is in walking distance. For entertainment there's Gruene Hall, the oldest saloon in Texas. You may have seen it in the John Travolta movie "Michael", where he dances. They always have good live entertainment, such as Hal Ketchum and Jerry Jeff Walker. Both the inn and saloon have web sites.Great place!
