accomodations in south beach, fl
Where should I stay with my boyfriend in south beach? I am overwhelmed by all the hotels there.
|
it's hard to suggest a hotel if we don't know your likes/dislikes. I'm not sure our suggestions will mean any more than a list on Travelocity!
|
Yes! Your requests will help me tremendously! I have searched and read and searched some more....I jst would really like to hear from some of your who have stayed in the area. We would like a fun, unique room, bar, either pool or beach walking distance, and not too loud at night. (I have heard some places are way noisy) We just were looking for suggestions that were more personal than "...beautiful view and art-deco rooms..."
|
At least give us a range. Are you thinking $100-150 per night? Or more like $500-750???
And when are you going? Prices will drop dramatically at the end of this month.
|
Going in August...low season. We would like to stay around $200 a night.

We stayed at "Hilton Grand Vacations South Beach", which despite its name, is a small 3 story art-deco hotel, right on the beach, near everything. We had 2 large rooms on the third floor, and the staff were very accommodating. We like smaller hotels. We booked it through Quickbook.com which I found is user-friendly. There are many others, depending on what your interests are. I believe that a text search for "south beach" would be helpful. Also, a good listing and description of many hotels there is on the Fodor's destination pages.

Does anyone know anything about the South Seas HOtel?
|
Karen,
I stayed at South Seas 2 years ago. The pool area was beautiful, surrounded by flowers and palm trees. There was also a palm tree grove separating the pool area from the beach. It had hammocks...great for napping. Most of the time it was fairly quiet by the pool, but sometimes the surrounding hotels would blast loud music in the early afternoon. Then we'd leave the hotel and wander around town.

The rooms were fine, from what I remember. However, the water was very very hard (i.e., high in mineral content) which made it very much a "bad hair" vacation. It was hard to get the soap off, and like I said, there was a constant dulling film on my hair. If I hadn't been so lazy, I would have gone across the street to the pharmacy and bought a jug of water to rinse off with. Anyway, this is my only complaint with the hotel.

The location is a bit far from the rest of the strip, but not too far to walk. There was also a nearby pedestrian mall (not on the water) that had some shops, galleries and cafes.

What else would you like to know?

I stayed at the South Seas Hotel for a long weekend trip last May. We really enjoyed it. We got a good rate (I think it was around $120) for an ocean-view room. It was a decent size with two double beds and a nice bathroom. Clean and neat.

The hotel has onsite parking, two tiki bars (one in front and one by the pool) where you can order a light lunch (they specialize in "bamboo steamed" foods and the entree-sized salads were delicious) or drinks. They have a nice pool and beach access with cabana service. It is walking distance to that pedestrian mall and all the restaurants down by the beach.

A good choice, all in all.
|
Oh yeah, the rate included a free breakfast. It was the typical continental buffet (cereals, bagels, yogurt, juice & coffee), but for an extra couple of bucks they will make you eggs or other hot foods.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.....Does anyone know anything about Nassau Suites or the Marlin?

I can recommend a couple of things for you. For one, you should be able to get the best rate in August but be careful, it's hotter than $#^%$ down there at that time. I have stayed ath the Loews and the Shelborne. Dollar for dollar in August, I would do Loews, or some upscale hotel. The Loews is luxurious and the staff knew my name literally when I stepped out of the cab. The rooms are new and modern and the amenities are at the upper end of the scale. It's simply a luxurious business class hotel. It's on the beach up near Lincoln road so it is quiet yet within walking distance to Ocean Drive. However, if you're not used to heat and humidity a block will seem like a mile in August! I have also stayed at the Shelborne. It is a few blocks up from the Loews north. If you get the right room with an Ocean or partial city view, it is just fine. The ceilings in our room were about 9 or 10 feet but the hotel is older as many hotels down there are. It is also a long way in the August heat from the action. Really, I would absolutely not visit So Florida in August unless you are used to that kind of heat. I like SOBE but I would go near the place in the hot months. It's just simply miserable. If you do go, don't settle for anything but the best high end hotel. Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for the replies! About the Loews....I think it may be a tad bit too "business-luxury" for what we want...if that makes any sense at all:) We were really wanting to find a funky/unique, but clean and semi-quiet hotel for a romantic getaway....we are trying to steer clear of cookie-cutter hotels. Any suggestions for us?

I am going to S Beach in May and staying at the Clay Hotel. It is about 58 a month with tax and, by the website, looks very meditterian. Nothing fancy, small rooms, but away from noise, clean, and cheap for that area. I have read a couple good reviews.
DAVE - We have reservations for this coming Friday at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club in South Beach! Were you happy with the accomadations? Would you go back to that resort again? I understand there is no pool and no one site parking! Good location though? Any suggestions for restaurants in the near vicinity? Thanks!

Friday:

Last May I drove past Beachcomber in South Beach. I remember getting brochures on this place. The prices were reasonable and when I saw it from the outside, it was an Art Deco hotel with a nice patio in front. Try the Lily Hotel too. If you are going over summer, the rates really go down.

Just be careful on South Beach. There are many NEW great hotels, but pricey. The majority are still the old, musty, original art-deco hotels. Even though they have been renovated. I walk into the lobby and get the smell of old Miami Beach. Mildew is part of life in Miami. I can't stand the smell so I prefer a new Hampton Inn and forego the atmosphere. New hotels are popping up constantly and there are sporacic deals so check each one.
