Accomodations in Anchorage and Seward
 

My wife and I are traveling in Alaska by rental car in early September. We would like some advice on places to stay and eat in Anchorage and Seward.

I highly recommend Bed & Breakfast on the Park in downtown Anchorage. It is an historic log cabin church which has been renovated by Helen and Stella, and they have GORGEOUS flowers and gardens. Best of all, they serve a superb breakfast. Rooms are cozy, all with bath, and very reasonable. Their website is www.bedandbreakfastonthepark.com. Four of us stayed there in September prior to a HAL cruise. We loved it.

We've stayed at the Voyager Hotel twice in downtown Anchorage (across the street from Captain Cook Hotel)and are staying there again in May. In Seward we stayed at the Seward Windsong Lodge (this was a package deal with a day cruise on Resurrection Bay). In Anchorage, if the Marx Bros. Cafe is open, the food is excellent.

If I ever win the lottery down here in Florida, I will fly to Anchorage to eat at Glacier Brewhouse aznd then go to Seward to eat at Ray's Waterfront. Both excellent seafood restaurants; I can't vouch for anything else.

The Marriott in Anchorage is pretty new, has lovely rooms, and the views are awesome. We could see Denali clearly each morning even though it was about 180 miles away.

We also stayed at an outstanding B&B about 10 miles south of downtown Anchorage called Salmon Run. Two bedroom cottages with awesome jacuzzis.

Here are the secret places...

Eagle River (15 minutes north of Anchorage)... go to Haute Quarter Grillle. Looks like a hole in the wall - best food in the state!!

Seward - Apollos is the best Greek & Italian food ever. Gyros our of this world.

Anchorage - Simon & Seaforts... wonderful view added with great seafood - oysters on the half shell.

Talkeetna - The Talkeetna Roadhouse! Biggest portions ever, and pastries to make your mouth water.

Chickaloon - Long Rifle Lodge. Food is not the draw here - the view will knock your socks off! The Matanuska Glacier in full view. But they have a great little homestyle menu too.

Lastly - the BEST hamburger in the state. In Anchorage - The RoadRunner.
They make a Kodiak burger and more there to quench any appetite!

Postal, I'll fly up from Texas to Anchorage with you just to have another meal at the Glacier Bay! I still have fantasies about their Herb-Crusted Halibut and their divine Seafood Chowder!

I was fortunate to be able to spend a month in Anchorage on a business trip, and my coworkers and I ate at the GB every chance we could get.

Sack's Cafe in downtown Anchorage (3rd and G) is wonderful -- fresh, inventive preparations, a bistro atmosphere, and a bit less expensive than the Marx Brothers Cafe, which is fantastic but pricey. Peter's Sushi Spot opened recently and has the best sushi I've ever eaten other than in Hawaii. It's in mid-town, and is close to the Moose's Tooth -- and wonderful pizzeria with thin crust (white and whole-wheat) pizzas, great Caesar salad, and many of their own beer selections. It's always crowded, attracts young people and old, and is one of our favorites. If you're going to Seward -- you might also want to think about Homer -- a bit farther but a lovely artist's community. Land's End is a fun hotel on the beach, and Cups Cafe is a fun restaurant.
