Accomodations along the Superior Hiking trail in Northern Minnesota

DD will be backpacking with her scout group on the Superior Trail in early July. DH and I plan to pick her up at the end of the trip to visit DS in Minneapolis. Just wondering which towns I should be looking at for places to stay before picking her up. We haven't explored this area since BC[before children]. We will probably camp the last night where the scouts will end their hike.

I have read the various posts about Grand Marias and Lutsen but not sure where they are in relation to the Superior Trail.

Suzie - the Superior Trail is over 200 mi long and runs between Two Harbors north to the Canadian Border. It hugs the shoreline most of the way, so it will depend on which way they're hiking as to where you should plan to stay to pick her up. The Trail runs just outside Lutsen, Grand Marais as well as most of the towns along the Northshore. We go up there fairly often and stay in the Lutsen/Grand Marais area. One of our favorites is the Thomsonite Beach Inn, which is in between Lutsen and Grand Marais. This area would be fine if they're finishing at the upper end of the Trail near the Canadian Border, but if they're ending the hike in the southern part of the Trial, the Two Harbors are would probably be better. Google Superior Trail to get more detailed info and a map. Also look at northshorevisitor.com for info on accommodations, restaurants, etc. Once you've determined exactly where the hike will end, let us know and we can give some more detailed recommendations.

Thanks for the info. Still trying to find out which direction they intend to hike.

DH and I stayed at Blue Fin Bay two years ago. We enjoyed it a great deal. Right across the street from the trail about mid way up from Two Harbors. If you go to Grand Marais, try the Angry Trout Cafe. I dream of returning there.

If you need lodging in the Two Harbors area, check out the Lighthouse! www.lighthousebb.org .

They have three rooms, and no on-site caretaker. A lady comes in in the morning to cook breakfast.

A great and unforgettable experience.

What a neat place, bookhall. It reminds me of the lighthouse at Whitefish Point at the other end of Lake Superior. It also has overnight accommodations. I will definetely keep it on my list.

Finally! DD's trip will end at Gooseberry Falls SP. That looks to be near Two Harbors. We may camp the last night at Gooseberry, but looking for alternate possibilities in the area. We plan to take two days to drive from mid-Michigan through the UP. I have checked out the site for The Lighthouse B&B. What other choices do we have in that area?

suzie - besides the Lighthouse also check out Superior Lake Lodge. We've not stayed there, but have seen some good reviews. There are also some cabins near/in the park which I think you can check out on the state park web site. July will be busy so remember that you're only going to be about 35-40 mi from Duluth, so if lodging in the Two Harbors area is full, you have that option.

Grand Superior Lodge is also on the Superior Hiking trail. It's two miles south of Gooseberry Falls. It has a Lodge with rooms plus Log Cabins and Log Homes for rent.
