Accomodations along Columbia River Gorge
 

My husband and I have our flight to Portland now for Sept. 7-15. We know we want to spend half the time along the Oregon coast and half of it exploring the Columbia River Gorge area. We need to decide on a place to stay in the Gorge area. I've looked online some, but would like to hear any ideas you may have. We would like to stay in a B&B, but would consider a cabin or hotel. Thanks for your help.

The Skamania Lodge is a nice, all around resort in a great location, can't go wrong with that place - centrally located too. WA side

My wife and I have stayed at the Inn of the White Salmon and really liked it. That would be a good base for exploring Hood River and Mt Hood, as well as Mt Adams to the north. Skamania would be better for exploring the central Gorge.

The night before your flight, I recommend The Edgefield in Troutdale, OR.

The Edgefield is very fun - years ago it was a "poor farm" then it became a nursing home and now hotel - there is a brewpub, and a winery, a theatre, a couple of restaurants
and whimisical art on every door, wall, even some of the exposed pipes -
There is frequently live music- really a fun place to visit

you could use it as a base for seeing the Gorge too -

We've stayed a lot of places in the gorge and most strongly recommend the Columbia Cliff Villas at exit 62 in Hood River. They are essentially luxury condos right on the bluff overlooking the river and are beautifully appointed. They are right next door to the Columbia Gorge Hotel, which sadly is not what it used to be, but there is excellent dining at Stonehedge Gardens just across the freeway.

Another vote for the Edgefield. Lots of fun and very unique!

If you want the B&B style, the View Point Inn is very nice.

I saw those beautiful condos being built next to the Columbia Gorge Hotel, and I'm glad to know they are the Columbia Cliff Villas.

We stretch our travel dollars booking a room with a balcony directly on the river at the Best Western in Hood River, dining at Cielo, and then going for dessert at Mike's Ice Cream on Oak Street.

The one time we went to Stonehedge Gardens we and others were ignored while two tables received all the service. I'm glad to know the food is good there, I wish I had been offered the opportunity to order some of it.

How far is Hood River from the Portland airport? I think we arrive around 2pm. We wouldn't mind driving a bit to get to our hotel.

It is close to an hour.

Yes, about an hour if you don't drive on the historic highway for the great views or stop to enjoy the waterfalls. HTTY
