Accomodation question in Lake Tahoe for skiing at Heavenly

I am looking into a ski trip to the Lake Tahoe region, and am leaning towards the Heavenly Ski Resort which seems to have lots of groomed intermediate runs. (I don't think my skills are up to skiing Squaw Valley yet.) So this puts me looking for accomodations in the South Lake Tahoe area. From what I have looked into, the south area is "busier" than the north, and I am a bit overwhelmed with what to pick from. I would like to stay at the nicest resort, closest to a ski-lift onto the mountain. I would love to be able to walk out of the hotel in my ski boots, get my skis, and get on a lift (as you can in Vail Village). Is this possible in South Lake Tahoe with Heavenly? I have narrowed down to two resorts ... Embassy Suites, which are supposed to be right by the gondola; and Christiania Inn,a smaller inn within "walking distance" (or so I am told) of the tram. (I prefer a full service resort or lodge to condominium accomodations.)

Can anyone that has skied at Heavenly and stayed in South Lake Tahoe offer recommendations?

Hi Cheryl-I am an intermediate like you and have found Squaw to have better trails than Heavenly. Heavenly's trail layout was confusing to me. I also liked Alpine Meadows, great bowls for intermediates at the top, Kirkwood, and Northstar. Take a group lesson or a have a mountain guide show you the trails. Incidentally, we stayed at condos on the South Shore which had a shuttle bus running to Heavenly.

Try the Tahoe Seasons at the base of Heavenly. Not exactly a plush five star resort, if that's what you are looking for, but very nice. Our room was huge, with living area, giant whirlpool spa enclosed by Japanese screens, kitchen and dining area, wet bar, large bathroom area, bedroom with queen sized bed and fireplace, T.V. and VCR. It is the largest hotel room I personally have ever stayed in, very comfortable, and you just ski over to the Heavenly lift lines in the morning.

Good luck!

I am rethinking ... would it be a good idea to split time between north and south Lake Tahoe? For example, start out with 4 nights at south end (ski at Heavenly) and then 4 nights at north end (ski at Squaw Valley). Thinking of the Squaw Creek Resort at north end, and either Embassy Suites, Tahoe Seasons, or Ridge Tahoe at south end. Would be flying into, and leaving out of Reno, and renting a vehicle. (From when I read, will probably try for 4-wheel drive as the weather seems to be changeable in the winter.) Any recommendations or thoughts?

We stayed in Heavenly and spent one day in Squaw. I actually really disliked Squaw - loud and windy. We stayed at the Embassy Suites, which were fine, inexpensive, but hardly luxurious. I cannot remember there being a gondola anywhere near then though - we always drove to the slopes. I would actually consider staying in one of the casinos if we were to go back, I suspect that the rooms are nicer.

Cheryl-I think you will find better prices on accomodations on the South end. As for getting to the north shore, check to see if there are shuttle busses to the slopes. You can also take the Tahoe Queen across, do brunch on the boat, happy hour on the return. It is a fun trip!
