Accomodation around NYC?

Hi. Need some help with accomodation in NY. Been surfing the net and found that I cannot afford anything in NYC. What about the surrounding areas. I do not mind commuting daily to the city. Any suggestions? Cost is a big concern. Anything below $100 is excellent!
Thank you.

Have you considered hostels? I stayed at the Hostelling International in April.
http://www.HInewyork.org

Hostelling is a lot of fun, plus you can save even more because there are kitchens available so you can cook your own food. This hostel also offers tours (sometimes free, sometimes with a fee). Just make sure you reserve with plenty of time.

We often stay in either Carlstaadt, New Jersey (near the Meadowlands) at the Hampton Inn, or in Secaucus, New Jersey at either the Hilton (week-end rates), Embassy Suites, or Hampton Inn. I believe there is also a Fairfield Inn near the Meadowlands. We usually plan our visits for Saturday nights and drive into the city on Sunday to avoid traffic and find parking, so I don't know about public transportation. Perhaps the hotels could help.
