Accommodations-Montgomery

Hi,
We are two senior women planning to visit Montgomery, Alabama for the first time. Information would be greatly appreciated as to accommodations that would be located in an area that will make it easy to get to points of interest, safe, clean, and under $100. Hope that isn't asking too much. Thanks in advance for your help. Carol Sue
I think there was an Embassy Suites in downtown Montgomery, right by the river that we stayed at once. Unfortunately, I can't remember the street name, but it was downtown, near the capitol.

In walking distance, there was a historic district (Old Alabama town???), the Hank Williams museum (a must), and a fantastic restaurant called Lek's Railroad Thai (get it? Tie-thai?)...

Embassy Suites is by far the nicest of the Montgomery options, and it is located near the river downtown...steer clear of the other downtown hotels. Otherwise, look for something on or near Carmichael Road...there are several Marriott properties, a Best Suites, and a Wingate Inn. These are all very close to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Museum of Art. There are also two brand new Hilton properties scheduled to open in the next few months off Perry Hill Road. You'll probably want to avoid anything on the Southern or Eastern Boulevard. There are some bed and breakfast options. Please post again if you want advice on any particular property. Montgomery doesn't have great public transportation, but thankfully parking is rarely a problem. If you decide to stay downtown, there is a "trolley-bus" which might be a better option than walking.

There are several hotels near the intersection of Carmichael Rd., IH-85, and Eastern Hwy that should suit your needs. The Hampton Inn, Ramada, and La Quinta come to mind.

In Montgomery do NOT miss the civil rights memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center. It was designed by Maya Lin and may be the most elegant and moving theme memorial I have ever seen.
