accommodations -Birmingham
 

Hi,<BR>We are two senior women planning to visit Birmingham, Alabama for the first time. Information would be greatly appreciated as to accommodations that would be located in an area that will make it easy to get to points of interest, safe, clean, and under $100. Hope that isn't asking too much. Thanks in advance for your help. Carol Sue<BR>

Afternoon ladies...I see you have posted for Mobile, Montgomery and Birmingham. I think it would help if you could tell what sites you are interested in visiting in each city. In an area the size of Birmingham, points of interest are spread miles and miles apart.

Some of the places we would like to visit are: the zoo; botanical gardens; museum of art; Arlington Antebellum home &amp; gardens; civil rights institute; drive through some neighborhoods; and go to &quot;City Stages&quot;...we are open to all suggestions...pro or con...our main concern is clean and safe..we don't mind driving....does this help? I live in Bham and would recommend the Embassy Suites in the Homewood area. Very nice and safe area. Convenient to Downtown, the Zoo, the Gardens, etc. <BR><BR>

Embassy Suites is a good idea. There is also a Marriott Courtyard on Lakeshore near the newly renovated Brookwood Mall that might be another option for you.

I just got the Sheraton Birmingham on

The Sheraton is nice, but not terribly convenient to the places you listed. The Embassy Suites is also nice in Homewood, but the exit ramp getting ina nd out can be a little bit tricky. I'd recommend the Hampton Inn on 280. It's not the finest hotel in the city, but it is right in the heart of the city, on the &quot;easy&quot; end of 280, close to Brookwood Mall, the Zoo, and in the middle of two of the prettiest neighborhoods in B'ham.

Also--if you want to eat a nice meal while you are there, I highly recommend Restaurant G downtown.

I suggest the Historic Tutweiler Hotel downtown. Very neat place and reasonably close to all those attractions.

Wasn't the Tutweiler demolished years ago? I seem to remember seeing it &quot;implode&quot; on the news.

Tutweiler Hotel is definitely still there!

Sorry! Which one did they tear down?

Not sure--seems like I remember this happening, but it was more towards the UAB area, on the outskirts of downtown. I can't remember the details nor the hotel though. Tutwiler is still there, though, and it's pretty grand. I am not sure it fits the &quot;under 100&quot; requirement of the OP though.

Thanks! As far as these two ladies go, I agreee with your earlier suggestion of staying on 280 - convenient for them and within easy access of shoppping and food. I am also partial to the neighborhoods, too.
Check out the docent program at both the Botanical Gardens and the Art Museum - for the added boost of a guided tour! The Southern Living Garden is one of my favorites.
